Int'l Plumbing Code

Does anyone know what the difference is between the Uniform plumbing code and the International plumbing code. I live in a county where they are changing from N.Y. State code to the I.P.C. Or if anyone is familiar with N.Y. state code can tell me the difference between n.y.s. code and IPC.Thanks guys.Chris

    Chris,
I was also curious about this, so i purchased the International Plumbing Code book, Just recieved it yesterday.
I am looking to take my Ct. state license in the near future.
I personally am looking foward to hopefully being able to adapt one code but as you know here in Westchester it's a pain in the ****, some municipalities will say,"No thanks we have are own supllements"

  • the ipc is basically the old BOCA codes

the upc is used primarilly out west and is more strict. ive worked under both and either are excellent codes.maybe, just maybe, before i die i will see just one national code like the electricians have. but hey, just getting down to the remaining TWO BIG model codes is already more than i thought i'd see.

    Poke around on the internet.

I know I have seen side-by-side, paragraph-by-paragraph comparisons between the SPC, the BPC and the IPC. I just can't remember where.

    Hello Chris

I also am in NY. Our new code will take over January 1. The new code is based on IPC. I am not sure how it compares to UPC but that would not matter in this case.

NY has taken the IPC and added to it. You must buy the NY books for them to be complete. There is an eight-book set kicking around. You might be able to get away with one or two books but would be better off buying all eight. I have gone through two or three of them. Over all it is going to be a good thing to have most of the state on the same page.

You can buy the books from Construction book express (They are hard to deal with)
My wife ordered our books off the net. If you have no luck email me and I will find out where she ordered them.

Make sure you buy the books for NY

    UPC/IPC

I am licensed under the IPC, and all so have the UPC with Washington state amendments. The UPC has better fuel gas tables, but it also seems to be more strict, acording to some. I see it as being a "plumbing for dummies" code in that it spells out everything, overwhelming you with code. The IPC is easy to use, easy to find the info I need for an Inspector, and leaves out a lot of the "delete this section and replaces chapter #" pages that the state of Wa. has added to the code amendments. Also, you wont find any thing about septic tank design and leach fields, things like that. Guess the writers thought some things should be a local issue. You know, I thought that I had it bad when I bought that UPC code, with the Wa. add ons, because I had to take it out of its nice red w/gold binder and put it in a new, larger binder so all that extra state stuff would fit, and it would all be up to date, and it doubled the size of the code book. 8 more books? Bummer.
Anyway, heres where I found a one stop shop for codes and study guides, IPC and UPC. Reeves Business Forms, Po Box 3569 Sunriver, Or 97707. www.reevesbusinessforms.com.
