Replacing Valves and Steam Traps

On my two-pipe steam system, most of my steam traps have failed and all are very old. Most of the control valves feeding the radiators have failed as well. I intend to replace all the steam traps and valves eventually. Most of the radiators are built-in and I would prefere not doing all the work at once.

Will the new steam traps or valves be damaged if failed steam traps and failed valves are still on the system?

    Do the Traps first

and the valves later. This way you complete the most important thing first- the traps.

If I pull a radiators out of the wall, I'd like to do all the work on the one radiator (the traps and the valves). If I only do some of the radiators, and some of the old failed traps and valves are still on the system, can the new traps and valves be damged?

    traps

replace only the trap element, not the whole trap.

    search for elements

ive got some turn of the century radiator traps to re-element--does anyone know what would fit Roberson and Boyntons? My supplier can only help me with Sarcos and i'd rather not scrap the old traps.I once saw a universal fit in PM but dont remember and cant find. thanks.

    Traps

I have heard from Dan at his seminars that you should replace all the traps (or elements inside traps which would be less expensive) at once because there is a possiblity that traps that are failing will pass steam into the return and possibly ruin the new ones. I would advise on doing as steamhead says and replace the traps first then go back and chnage the vallves.
