Piping water tank

I have a friend that has a superstore runningoff his WM Boiler and an electric water heater sitting right next to it that used to be the hot water source. I say why not use it for storage to increase capacity. How would you go about piping it. I'm thinking a litle circ would be necessary, mayby run by the existing t/stat of the elec water heater. Thanks for your ideas in advance. WW

what i have done, is set up the thermostat in the water heater to act as an aquastat for the circulator. You will have to re-wire the thermostat to use 120VAC instead of the 240VAC, and change the elements to 120VAC elements to work with it as well. A little bit of work. Is it really worth it.

i would
not put the by pass in, and install a swing check in that location, the homeowner, may open the valve, and when the pump is running, could get hot water back through the cold water faucet.
Having said that, I still think the work would overrule the benifits

One other
thing you could try is just piping the cold into the electric tank first, with no wiring, and use it to "temper" the water before being heated. The water in the electric tank should reach, or close to, room temp overnight and instead of heating from 40 degrees your heating the stored water from room temp (60-65++). You may still want the by-pass from when the tank goes but without the expansion and contraction of the hot water it may last quite a while.0 -
hey Wayne...
does he realy need the extra storage? A simplified alternative I use is to put in a Sparco am-101 , raise the SS ans mix down to 125F(never had a complaint yet). If the tank is still an option there is a good diagram at the heat transfer products web site undertheir gl-50 booster tank literature. Good luck!0
