leaky radiator valve

My 1-pipe steam radiator is leaking water from the connection (where the steam pipe attaches to the radiator). I tightening the ring but no success. Is there supposed to be a rubber gasket/o-ring that is possibly missing? Does the entire valve need to be changed?

Maybe
you just don't have it quite tight enough. If it keeps leaking, coat the threads with pipe dope that has Teflon in it. Also spread a bit on the faces of the union where they join together. This may solve your problem.
If you see any cracks in the union, tailpiece or valve body, the valve will need to be replaced. This can be difficult, so your best bet would be to go to the Find a Contractor page of this site to locate someone who can handle it.

best advice
You will probably need a radiator spud wrench and some gasket sealer. In the past I have had success with blue block and permatex. Just make sure they are cured first.
Your best bet would be to find someone though.
