Snowmelt Question (OYPH)

When installing a snowmelt system, what considerations do you take into account for drainage. If it is a gravel/bluestone drive way do you need drainage. If it is asphalt, who would install a catchbasin, is it necessary? Is it normally the responsibility of the snowmelt installer?

Yeah, the installer
needs to be concerned with where the melt water will go, I feel. I recall steep uphill drives in the mountains with a wall of ice at the bottom. Often large enough that you couldn't drive over the ice to get to the steaming driveway! How bizarre, how bizarre, all that money and you can't get there from here
The snow plow drivers hate hitting these ice dams. Figuring out what to do with the melt off can be a problem. Where ever the heated pad ends the ice dam begin You really need to pipe it away to a basin below frost level. Just depends on how much "melt" water you need to get rid of I suppose. Also run a loop along with your drain away pipe.
Certainly the builder, homeowner, and architect need to be involved in the process. Good luck.
