I manage arental property owned by our Athletic Assoc. Almost 3 yrs. ago I installed a new W-M oil fired unit. I always told the tenant if he couldn't get ahold of me to call the oil co. Who is a very good outfit with good service men. He calls me today to explain that the boiler started smoking late in the night, he called oil co. who cleaned the chimmney base. (heater was cleaned this spring) Tenant explains only a couple hrs after that the boiler starts banging and hissing so he calls them back. By this time it is early morning so they call me also. Service man say the aquast went bad. He wanted to know if he should replace it or did I want to do it. I told him to do it since he was already there. He calls back a short time later and asks me who wired the boiler. I told him I did . He goes on to explain that the power wire from the switch was hooked directly to the burner. That whenever the power was turned the burner would run without the aqustat to shut it off. Now I got to beileve this guy I guess but I can't beileve for a min that that boiler has been operating that way for 3yrs!! What do you guys think?

    If it is wired............

directly to the burner, by-passing the 8124, what stopped the burner? Who's he kidding?

  • What brand of burner

and what primary control was on it ? Some need constant hot to run a post purge control or nozzle line heater . It might come wired like that if you bought it packaged . If the serviceman said it was wired hot and running all the time , the boiler wouldve went into steam ( the hissing noise ) and the relief valve wouldve been running and flooding the floor constantly .

The WM Gold boiler has a plug in wiring harness that must be unplugged to open the swing-open front plate. The harness end has the red wire for the post purge/ nozzle line heater already wired to the switch whether the burner plugged into it uses it or not. Earlier models with Beckett burners and no post purge had the red wire capped in the burner.
