Weil-McLain Ultra

To debut the Ultra boiler.

It is a Aluminum block which looks very much like a CI boiler design. Pin and water jacket from what I could see. Use's a variable speed fan with a venturi on the gas valve to pull gas into the mixture to adjust output. Has a outdoor reset and priority for domestic built in as standard features (nice touch). 93 percent efficiency and claims to go up to 97, I beleive as the delta T becomes closer. PVC venting with a nicly design jacket. Has a nice digital control package with fault codes for ease in diagnostics. It is fully condensing during the heating cycle, so it puts out a lot of condensate. I believe the 155,000 output unit will modulate down to about 33,000 ( maybe wrong but I am pretty close ) For you WeilMclain installers this could be a nice new boiler.

Down Side was the presentation. According to the saleman, we New Englanders don't want anything new, like the guys out in Colorado or California. So this boiler is acutally fifteen years old ? I guess you guys out west will be getting something really new ( cold fusion ?). Also sales pitch was that the Europeans are coming into the market with this "stuff" and WM had to do "something" to keep up ??
Really made me proud of this USA Co. I guess if the Euro's had'nt come into the market we would still be getting the same thing.

Back to the boiler, its a little big compared to our "doughnut" friend. I was also supprised that there was no jacket insulation. I understand they want to warm the makeup air as it comes in, but would'nt you want to hold on too some of that heat or is it designed to heat the boiler room also. Also, can not use standard hydronic anit-freeze, as this effects the Aluminum. The priority mode has no time built in to switch back to heat mode if you loss the circulator ( one of my pet peeves ).

Last note about the sale pitch. WM man said Dan Holohan says the Euro's like to look at their boilers so we made this one with an attactive jacket. Honestly.

Nice new product from an American Co.

Sales pitch needs a bit of work.

Scott

Scott, i am interested in the munchkin but have not got feedback yet on their reliability over a year or two. Any insight regarding this. Here in seattle they have just been brought in by one of our main line reps and i have a job that it may fit the bill if i am comfortable that it is not going to be a nagging thorn. Thanks for any insight. Tim

We have done four muchkins, others have done much more.

I am please with the boiler and its service from the factory. They are moving forward and thinking about the boiler all the time and what can be improved all the time. Thats my feel for it. It is going to be very versatil when they get the outdoor reset involved.

Maybe we can get some others to add input for you.

Mark ??? You out there ??

    Price

My supplier thinks this boiler will cost somewhere north of $4000. Not sure what it really has that is better than the Munchkin with outdoor reset except that maybe they will be more availble than the Munchkin. Any thoughts on whether it has features that would warrent paying more than the Munchkin?

    maintenance

What maintenance requirements to keep warranty in force? I'm thinking of the munchkin's bi-annual heat exchanger interior cleaning requirement.

    The lollipop guild!!!

I have 15 Munchkins up and running right now and we are currently installing #16.

I have not had any major problems with the Munchkins. The worst situation was when we got one of the units with the pierced pressure switch. New switch, no problem.

The folks at HTP really have their stuff together. Mark Eatherton first posted about the Munchkin and now everyone is comparing themselves to it.

Sounds like the WM rep needs to learn some manners?

I have only looked very briefly at the "Ultra" and have no opinion on it.

We will stick with HTP and the Munchkin.

For such a little boiler it sure is making a big difference in the industry!!!!

    w/m ultra boiler

Also witnessed a demo and salespitch on the Ultra.I'm a Chicago area W/M dist. and was impressed enough to order a few.
I feel the people at Weil really did their homework.More size's will be available next year.Take a good look at the passageway size and compare it with other condensing boilers. The pricing will probably be under $4000. for the 230m/btu size.
We will be installing a 230 in our main store as a live demo.
  • re: weil mclain

i am concerned about the heat exchanger on the Weil mclain boiler, i think it is aluminum????? if so,high temps and aluminum have never been a long term marriage. Still looking for more munchkin info.

    Glycol

I am hearing conflicting reports about the Alphi-11 Glycol solution of theirs. If glycol is needed, do you have to use their brand? The installation instructions I read said you have to use theirs, my WM rep said Inhibited Proplyene Glycol will work just as well. Their solution is really spendy at 190.00 (list) per 25 Liter (6.6 gal).

    Alphi 11

is actually an inhibitor that is added to glycol. Usually 9 parts to one. It was sold for years by Heatway, along with other Fernox (made in England) products. There were some issues with shipping and handling of the product. I'd make sure you get a letter from all the tube and hose manufactures concerning the compatability issues.

Becareful Alphi 11, alone, is NOT an antifreeze!

Hey Weil, a much better product is made right here in the ole US of A. Have your people call my people :)
