BB's running sound in pipes

It sounds like small bee-bees running in one of my pipes (single pipe steam, residential). I can hear it when I'm in the basement and it's in a pipe running overhead to the first floor. It lasts for maybe a minute or two, then goes away. What is that sound all about? System works very well.
