Just had a middle of the night ignitor falure, cold, sleepy, long drive, etc. Good for sales but I like to install equipment for customers that you can rely on! Why havent damn manufacturers gone to the Silicon Nitride ignitors? You can drive them into a 2x4 with a hammer, then energize till the board is burned in two!

simple answer
If that were the case, you would never have to buy another replacement HSI.

White Rodgers does have
a silicon nitride upgrade kit available. It is White Rodgers part # 21D64-1. It is selective as to which silicon carbide igniters you can replace but it does cover quite a few. The kit is designed to convert existing hot surface ignition (HSI) systems from silicon carbide (flat or spiral) to a nitride igniter. The kit will not replace sealed combustion igniters Norton 271A or 271Y, Robertshaw 41-401 0r 41-406 (same as Norton igniter they are just distributed by Robertshaw) or White Rodgers 767A-356.
The new power module connects the new nitride igniter to the existing module (you now have two modules) The new module steps down and regulates voltage (intel igniter system is similar)to the igniter providing approximately 80 volts RMS to the igniter. The module and igniter are matched to assure proper operation.0 -
wouldn't it be great Chuck!

If it makes you feel any better...
I had to change the Ignitor in my own Carrier 80% furnace Thursday when I got home from work. On the other side of the coin, the ignitor I took out was eight years old, so I can't complain.

Appears to be a profit mine for manufacturers
I've seen thermocouples 25 years old and still working. I think its alot like why thermostatic traps are used on new two pipe steam, Orifice valves require no maintenacne but traps do....the manufacturers are making sure they have business in the future.
