Why not check with the manufacturer? For a worthy cause like this, they might be willing to stretch a point if needed.

    Kindly gesture

A homeowner in the Detroit area read my letter to the editor (The Detroit Free Press -- Christmas Eve) about the local heating and cooling contractor group which serviced and fixed furnaces for senior citizens free of charge. The homeowner said that her husband had remodeled their home, adding three rooms and replaced the existing furnace and condensing unit with higher tonnage and more efficient units. She still has the old equipment (about 7 years old) which is in perfect condition. She wants to donate it to a family that needs new equipment.

I referred her to a local contractor who would be able to give her a better answer. I told her that because of warranty and liability issues, I wasn't sure if a contractor would reinstall used equipment. Is there a right or wrong answer to this question?

    Code

Here in Michigan simply says that used equipment has to be OK'd by the inspector prior to installation, then all the other things can happen as usual.

    Sounds like an oxymoron

7 years old in perfect condition? The motor and fan never spun? The gas valve never cycled? HX never heated and cooled? Soundy risky for the installer. The labor time and cost, and warranty are the bigger issue, in my opinion. FA furnaces aren't that expensive. Find a supplier willing to donate or deeply reduce a scratched unit, and sleep better :)
