Temporary/emergency burner chamber gasket???!!!

The gasket material around the inspection door for my oil burner chamber is missing at the top. (maybe it fell in?) What can I use until Monday when I can get some proper gasket material?

Definately letting in some combustion fumes, which cannot be good. The CO monitor hasn't gone off but you can smell the fumes.

I have some Roxul mineral wool Fire/Accoustic batts as well as regular fiberglass batts. I also have one of those flame-protector cloths, used when sweatin pipes.

Any suggestions?

TIA,
Phil

    CEMENT & ROPE

The directions on the cement says you must wait 12 hrs to cure. Plus, then the access door would be cemented shut.

Running rope? Is that some kinda fireproof rope? That's what I would want, but all the supply houses are closed til Monday. HD & Lowes do not sell it around here.

    Thanks for the ideas.

Listen to a oil tech.Get the furance cement, shut the unit down for a couple of hours so it cools down a bit. Then just but enough to cover the opening and fire the bad boy up.It will dry in as little as 15 minutes once the heat hits it.Not long term fix but will get you there until tommrrow. Also cement will come right off with a couple of wacks with a small hammer and a large screw driver.Just not to hard ok :)

    FLORISTS CLAY

It's sticky--it comes in rope form--it won't burn and you should be able to find it at Wal-Mart or similar.

If your wife cooks like Ms. Gabor on "Green Acres" you could use a hotcake.

could use silcon caulk high temp would be better
  • Yep , I agree with Joe

Shut the boiler down and apply some furnace cement around the edge . Sal , a guy I work with showed me a good trick to get it in tight spots - Put the cement into a plastic bag and push it to the bottom , then cut a small hole in one of the edges of the bottom , and squeeze out the cement like a baker would squeeze out the topping on a cake . Works real good . And you dont have to wait that long to let it dry - set it and forget it -the heat will cure it quickly .
