thanks Scott!
Scott,
This picture really represents the time had by all. The weekend was a giant get together with 200 of your closest friends. You could walk up, sit down, and join anywhere from 1 (having a beer with Ken Secor) to 25 (dinner at "naked fish") and always feel VERY welcome.
Great conversation, great friendship, great fellowship.
Now, where can I take this road again???

Nice Photos
Hey nice photos except for the bald headed guy sitting at Hot Rod's table. Oh wait a minute...that's me.
Anyway, it was wonderful to put the faces to the internet names. I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to learn and to share with some the best and the brightest our industry has to offer.
My thanks to Dan for setting it all up and to you for taking the time away from your business to be with all of us.

PS: I'll make a separate post with some thoughts exchanged at the "company policies" table while I was there0 -
Some thoughts from the \"Company Policies\" table
Here are some of the notes I took while at the "Company Policies" table:
Unfortunately, people associate "Policies" with "Police"
it's really about getting the housekeeping out of the way so you may be free to focus on the job at hand.
Would you want to fly in an airplane where the pilot felt free to skip the checklist and to follow his own procedures?
Set a goal. Set how to measure objectively. Create a policy [what we do]. Create a procedure [how we do it]. Track what you're measuring. Analyze that.
Progressive discipline can be: a discussion [verbal warning], a write-up, a suspension and a dismissal
The owner's two real jobs are to "Inspire" [share the vision] and to "Implement" [create the repeatable systems that work]
If you were at the "company policies" table, I'd love to hear what you thought was worth sharing.

Great Time
Thanks Jeff for the dinner on Friday. Hope your wife's feeling better.
I got in on Friday about 2:00 and met Dave Broome at the bar where we sat and talked heating for about an hour in the peace and quiet. Timmie came in with his wife and again in the quiet of the place we talked about business. Then in came "The Three M's. Mad Dog, Mark and Murph. Boy, the mood kinda changed. I think I now know why Murph's the sheriff. Someone has to keep those two boys in line.
It was great putting faces to names, slamming a few drinks and sharing ideas. Scott, I swear I didn't see that 40.
I guess I was the old guy at the table when Scott and JRH were sharing photos of their little kids and I'm showing pictures of my 20 and 21 year girls. The girls keep on hugging dad, even when they grow up.
I left on Sunday morning, drove to Loon Mountain in NH and skiied for a few hours before driving home to Delaware. Got home about 11PM.
It made for a long day and capped off a fun and educational weekend.
Dan this is something I would do again in a heartbeat.
The day passed too quickly.
Dale W. from Delaware0 -
It did go by in a flash, didn't it?
Great to have you there, Dale. Thanks.Retired and loving it.0 -

A few of my notes
What a great roundtable! Took most of my notes here.
I too had noted the owner's two jobs. It was also brought up that one is no good without the other.
Other notes:
-Procedures and policies can be applied to any aspect of a business, from how to reprimand, down to how to wash the company vehicles.
-If an employee is having problems outside of work, it should not be allowed to interfere with their professional life. One approach is to let the employee know you understand they are encountering difficulty with their life outside of work, but you refuse to let their professional life slide down with it. If things are bad, they're only going to get a whole lot worse without a job.
Another approach is the analogy of going to see Don Mattingly and the Yankees play. When you show up at that stadium, do you care what he did the night before, or what he does with his free time? No, but you do expect him to show up at his job, and give it 100%. He does not let his personal life interfere with his work performance, and it's no different for anyone else, in any other job.
-Find a niche! Form a partnership with other companies. If you're a fuel oil company that doesn't like to do plumbing, then find a plumbing company that doesn't like to do fuel oil, and agree to recommend each other.
-To achieve our goals of having what we want, we must first:
BE - who are you? What do you want out of life?
then:
DO - Go out and do it. Jumpstart things by "acting as if" and "fake it until you make it". Study successful people, and then emulate them.
-I think this had to do with selling. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
"When you're asking questions, you're right, when you're talking you're wrong."
-for policies and procedures: ANYTHING is better than nothing!
Mark
p.s. the only other note I took of the day was when I found out from Mark Eatherton that painting copper "Flat Elm Leaf Green" gives copper pipe the biggest heat output... man, what a great day!0
