Setting anticipators

Here's a tip you can use to set anticipators accurately, since most ammeters (even digitals) don't read well at low amps. Make yourself a coil from thermostat wire with exactly 10 loops in it. Place the coil in the circuit and clamp your ammeter around the coil. You will read exactly 10 times the current on the ammeter, so divide the reading by 10 to get the circuit current.

Dead right
This trick ws taught to me my the guy that got me started in this business 20 plus years ago.
I taught it to the 'Service Manager' of a company I used to work for. He'd just turn the heat anticipators's all the way up.0 -
There is a meter for that, its costs about sixteen dollars and all you do is remove the stat and clip to R&W.It shows you your current draw.I love it,its so fast and easy.I will post later and let you know who makes it......Mike0 -
amps check
I also have the little amps check meter it has two aligatior clips and a analog face. You simply attach each one of the clips two the red and white wire on the thermostat. Turn the thermostat up above room temp so it closes the sw. the meter will regester the amps draw. Simply set the antisapator to the amps draw. I got it 15 years ago at a plumbing and heating supply house. I think it is called amps check. only 2.5 x 2.5 sq.0 -

I did that with a Dead Man's Ammeter
This old GE belonged to an old-timer electrician near where I grew up. He was one of my early mentors. I bought it when his business was closed after he became a Dead Man. I'll NEVER get rid of it!
This one took a few more turns of wire to make it read accurately. I checked it on my boiler primary which is rated at 0.2 amps, then on several others with different amp ratings to verify its accuracy.
R.I.P., John Gamber.
