    If you look at

the installation instructions for a B&g base mounted pump they recomend a minimum of ten pipe diameters of straight pipe going into the suction inlet. this is to prevent cavitation at the inlet. if you are working with a pump with a 3 or 4" inlet the pipe would be quite long. if you just drop down and elbow in, air will have your impeller for lunch. a suction difuser has vanes in it to straighten the flow of water in a very compact space. it also has a strainer basket with a fine mesh "start up screen" in it. this screen is meant to be removed after the first few hours of operation. better difusers will have a threaded plug in them at the bottom, and the plug will have a magnet built in to collect chips etc. I usually install a tee at the bottom, put the plug back in, and install a ball valve with a hose bibb on the run. if you don't use the suction difuser you have to have a long piece of inlet pipe and a wye straioner on the inlet side. very rarely is there room for this arraingment. hope this helps. controls turbulance and flow into the suction side of the pump. It allows a pipe drop directly into the suction side of the pump. One benifit is space savings another is cavitation prevention...
