    Dirty LP or Mapp?

I find I have to disassemble mine ocassionally and use an air nozzle to clean thing out.

What exactly are the symptoms? If you run them to low you melt and distort the tip sometimes. Truck storage, or lack of :) can tweak them also.

    Flux?

or water? Do you hold your torch right under the joint and let stuff run down into it? Mine might be a brand other than turbo but is quite a few years old and the one before that lasted at least ten before I dropped it.

    Dirty torch

Look down the inlet tube. They sometimes have a type of allen screw that when removed or turned around can clear debre from the nozzle. You have to turn the allen around or take it out and turn on the gas without liting the torch..

    Turbo Torch Troubles

Rich has the right idea here. Unscrew the tip, then remove the orifice with a small allen wrench. You can then screw the orifice into the other end of the torch and blast some Mapp gas or propane through it to clear the opening.

    Then just reassemble it.

I've found that Mapp gas seems to burn cleaner than propane (hotter, too, of course) and since switching to Mapp I haven't had many problems with the torch screwing up.

sore point btween me & my old man

We don't have the small mapp or propane torches, but use Turbo Torch regulators, tips, handles, etc for our mc, and b-tanks of acetylene. I have had the same set of self lighting tips since they came out 7-8 years ago...in fact other than occasionally cleaning out and putting a little wd-40 in the inlet of the handle I have never had to sit and clean them because of a problem. My dad on the other hand is always bitching about how we spend money on this crap and it never lasts. Of course he ALWAYS downfires the tip while soldering, this is because he only has a big tip...doesn't feel like carrying more, and somehow every drip from a solder joint falls in the tip. Once I told him he wasn't using it right, and I got the old "Listen, I forgot more about soldering than you think you know now." Sound familiar to anyone? All joking aside, I feel I am extremely lucky to have a father who had the patience to give me an apprenticeship that started when I was ten years old and continues today. Even if I think I might know some things better now, he gave me a golden pair of hands that can make me a living......

Make sure they’re assembled correctly. I had a small gas torch which kept going out & was difficult to light. The removable nozzle had moved forward slightly, so that the gas was drawing in too much air. It wasn’t apparent that there was anything loose. Re-fixing the nozzle was a revelation. I'm not familiar with Instalite.

paul has nailed it. i've used turbo's for 20 years. i've only replaced them twice. you have to clean the orifice. mapp gas is dirty and particles get stuck in the orifice. then it will usually flare up and the not burn properly.
