Buderus

I've been installing Burnham Boilers for about 8 years now,and the time has come to replace my own boiler(crane sunnyday).I've decided to go with a Buderus G115-21 with an "st" domestic tank.I'm trying to decide on the burner!Efficiency battle between the three is pretty much a draw.Reliability does'nt concern me much(plan on being in the trade for a long time to come.)So that brings me to sound!Which is the quietest combo? I have a dual flue chimney. My fireplace is in the other flue(stainless liner insulated). When my current boiler is running (in the basement)the sound of combustion is ,i think, amplified by the fireplace in the first floor living room.Although ,i am firing that crane with an AFG so that probably does'nt help!So which combinations have you Buderus installers found to be the quietest? Thanks!

    I like .....

Riello, but for quiet I lean toward the Carlin EZ. Every house and chimney are a little different. The carlins we have on the direct vent buderus are real quiet. Have a few on chimneys also.

    AF2

Thanks for the reply.I was thinking i read, either here or somewhere else, that the AF2 burner was either noisy or was hard to get burning right in the buderus.Any truth to this?

    I have found

that the Riello can be very noisey in some applications and it is from the combustion noise in the chimney, yet we just installed a g115/28 in a chimney that was lined and the second flue was seperate you can barely hear it, it really depends on the chimney itself. I have had great luck with both the Carlin and Riello. I have only installed 1 AFII and have found that after going back to service it in one year the flue passages were not as clean as the other Buderus' that I have put in. I have installed around 60 to 70 of them in last 6 years.

    burners and buderus

I am in a similar boat.I have a buderus 115-21 siting in my basement waiting for me to hook it up and rid my house of the FHA-furnasty.I choose the Carlin EZ 1 over the Riello. I have heard both and the noise is a bit less with the EZ. The Chimney noise outside is really loud on the Riello. The other reason I took the EZ was I wanter the post purge on the burner. It is more reliable and easier to get with the Carlin.I had a problem I don't want to relive w/ riellos k7r control. kpc

    AFII

I would strongly recommend a Riello or a Carlin!

    Nuff' said.

    Buderus

We seem to do best with Beckett burners on the G-215 series bolers. They seem much quieter than Riello. The Beckett AFg is also very relaible...

    Burners

We install alot of Buderas mostly g115 series all with Riello. The f3 Riello is very quiet, what is noisy though is the static noise in the flue pipe. Whenever possible we run them without barometric dampers, this is okay as long as draft and stack temp are proper. If we have to use a barometric we increase to 6" at breech and try to face damper away from living area. There is also a muffler available through Buderus although I haven't used one. Good luck.

also to add to priscos post, the new cover on the beckett really mutes the noise levels. although piping the oil line down the bottom could be re-enginered IMO.

    Thanks

for all the replies.I ordered the boiler with the carlin. We'll see how it sounds! If it is to noisy, i'll scratch the chimney and direct vent it.I stock that carlin primary since the 1st batch of burnham V8's used it.So i can add the post purge if necessary. Can't wait to get it in! Almost like an early christmas gift!

    Just installed a G-115

Yesterday. Equipped with Riello F-3 burner. Went back to tidy the place up, do a combustion test, haul out the old boiler and show the HO how to use the 2107 control. He told me he got up 3 times during the night to check on the boiler. Said it was nice and cozy in the house but he couldn't hear it running so he thought something might be wrong. "Nope, that's how they sound" I said. Makes me smile when I hear comments like that. The wife asked why the house feels warmer with the t-stat (BFU room sensor) set a couple degrees lower than normal. This led to a 15 minute discussion on constant circulation. At the end of it they both asked why all systems aren't set up that way.

This little guy runs at a couple tenths over 87% comb eff. 0 smoke. .50 nozzle running at 170PSI. CO2 in the high 11% range.

I like the Riello burners a lot.

    cold start?

The aquastat that came with the boiler is a cold start.I did'nt get the logamatic control.Should i leave it a cold start or change the aquastat to maintain a minimum temp?I don't know about the buderus ,but some of the burnham(and other boilers) with cold start set-ups seem to build up scale deposits pretty bad.Makes them rotten to clean!I realize in the winter it won't have much time to cool down, but in spring and summer i think it will. The wife and i work all day so the indirect won't even be calling much. What's your thoughts on this?

    Another question!

The manual that came with the tank says that they supply the rector seal and x-tra heavy teflon tape.I got neither! What i did get was locktite #55 thread sealing cord.Should i pick up some rector seal and tape ,or use the cord,or both?Sorry for all the questions, but i want to do it once and right.I don't have time to work on my own boiler...too busy working on everyone elses!

    I have

never used the loctite stuff. I like good ol' reliable telon and dope. Whitlam blue magic or rectorseal does the job. I'm not a fan of permatex. Too messy!
I know what you mean about the time. I have had my own Buderus and superstor siting in my basement for three months w/ little to show for it.I am forced to get by w/ the hot air system for now. I can complain work is good....better than the alternative! kpc
PS.-I know what you mean about the cold start. I have heard some guys here don't believe in cold start. What about the energy savings????

    energy savings

I would like the energy savings of a cold start, seeing as how i have too much baseboard installed for the heatloss of the house,it would probably be satisfied with 140/150 degree temp and not have to hit the high limit very often, but not at the expense of scaling up my new boiler!Guess i can try it and see what happens.Yes busy is good, and things are very good on this end too!

    Go RIELLO AND THROW BECKETT

I have a buderus g215 (4) I had a 99 FRD Carlin installed for 6 months. It Sucks!!! I was told straight from Buderus that they have had problems. If you have a strong draft It roars like a lion and shuts off the flame.

Beckett is new to the Buderus line up. Call Beckett and some of them never heard of Buderus and others told me it was never application tested.I believe Oil burner guys push Beckets because they do not understand Riello.

Not to knock Burner Guys but in my area not one Oil burner tech was qualifyed to work on Riello. I went myself (the homeowner ) to the Riello training class to make sure that this beautiful machine gets what it deserves.I will put this into all my rental properties. I bought my own comustion kit and came up with the following readings.

    Draft breech .02
    Smoke 0
    Co2 12
    Gross stack temp 380

If your a homeowner reading this page. I can only tell you to toss the beckett and carlin but call riello for a oil tech thats at least a high school graduate.None of this stuff is a mystery.

    Good Luck

    he also..

had a 215 boiler... you and I have a 115. different boilers, different burners, different results.I usually use a riello on 215s. good luck.
You might try a Honeywell 8124 instead of the 8148.maybe put the low at 120F. This is not the first time this subject has come up on this wall.Maybe I will post it soon. kpc

    It's in!

Thanks for all the advice! It's in and running like a champ.Very quiet! If i could get rid of the burner(combustion air) noise ,i don't think i could hear it at all!VERY,VERY nice boiler! And the "st150" is great also!Just a bit of bad luck though.Bad primary right out of the box.Run 5 sec, lockout on safey.Reset it ,same thing.Reset it,jumped out cad cell, same thing. The lockout time is 15 sec,so don't know whats up with the 5 sec.I did read that if the motor contacts get stuck together, the control is made to lockout.Maybe thats what happened?Anyway, new control and everything is fine.I did put a honeywell 8124 on and set the low at 130.I think i'm gonna have to adjust the flue gas baffles.Running a pretty low stack @ 320*.Thanks again for all your help!
