Noisy Burnham Boiler

We just moved into a new house. Our heating and hot water is from an oil-fired Burnham boiler. The system seems to work great, except for that fact that every time the boiler fires up, I have to scrape the wife and kids off the ceiling - sounds like the space shuttle just lifted off.
After the loud initial firing, the boiler runs a bit louder than normal for about 10 seconds - then settles into a very smooth and quiet operation.
While I would like to remedy the loudness of the first 10 seconds, it is mostly the initial firing that troubles me.
Is this common? I've asked the tech about it, but he said, "yeah, they do that." I was kinda hoping for a better answer than that.
Any experience here and insight is greatly appreciated.
Thanks much -

noise
you say it's only noisey at start up?
That sounds like a draft problem, is it an outside chimney by chance?
a delayed oil valve should help. What type of burner?
If it's a beckett with a v head- I have found that a lot of burner techs really don't know how to set the Z dim properly.
Take a good look at the chimney, check draft cold and warm, be sure that it is in good shape, check that surrondind treees are not blocking it.0 -
Burner Noise
I would like to speak to you about this noisy boiler issue. There are several questions that I will need to ask you regarding the model and installation. Some of these questions may get rather technical in nature and will require the expertise that your oil company would have. All boiler/burner combinations are set up at the factory for ideal conditions such as a 15 foot chimney, proper combustion air, etc. More often than not, field adjustments are necessary to correct problems like you are encountering. Contact me at the e-mail address with your name, address and phone number along with your burner technician's name and number and I will be glad to help make this problem go away. Hope this helps.
