Want opinions on boilers stacked on indirect tanks

On a new job, mech room is a little tight, but have room not to stack. I just thought it looked really cool, and would make servicing boiler easier not having to work on my knees. Any opinions are welcome- good or bad.

    Go for it!

    Casmo,

I would suggest buying the electric anode and LED which comes with the option. This gives a visual green light for A-OK and a red light for replacement. The service acess to clean the HX is very nice if and when you need it.Sounds like you're into a cool project.

Is the post and beam have streskin panels for the walls and roof?

I used both Buderus and Viessmann and never had any trouble with them. Sometimes in tight spots, sometimes just for the hell of it. go ahead and try it..Ac

    Yep

The owner on this project owns a bed & breakfast inn. He has built many buildings like this one. This particular post and beam frame came from a barn about 3 mile away. I think that it is 80 years old but not sure, but boy is the old oak tough! My only concerns are what happens if the tank leaks, and why does Buderus use a steel tank w/ anode instead of stainless steel? I know steel has a better rate of heat conductivity, but stainless seems like the way to go. I have used a lot of Crown megastors and have had no problems so far. I am always cautios before trying something new like this stacked arrangement!! I am one of those geeks who has to know just about everything possible about something before I install it for a customer, after all I have to hold up to my business name!

I cant help you with the whys.Funny thing about SS in indirects......I had two leakers with SS a few years ago.Not Mega store or the V-cell.If the heating equipment is getting serviced annually the indirect is right there. The warranty is limited lifetime 79 gallons or less. This is an 8 year unconditional I belive and then a pro-rate from there.I believe.

The tank has quite a generous coating inside. Its called thermoglaze. It reminds me of an enamel.Virtually inpenetrable. If you go this route make sure you order the correct tank. There are 2 models one for gas and one for oil.The upright models have a better transfer rate.I have two horizantals out there........no problems........yet;)

    Tanks

This is my fifth one in about three years and no call backs.

Its much more commomn in Europe. I can't beleive they enjoy changing tanks.

Sorry I forget this was the picture I can't shrink. If any body can correct that thank you!

Hey , I remember that post! The boiler with a view!

Yes, your right...I am sure that Buderus is confident in their product. I just hate to think about lifting the boiler off to replace a tank w/ a defect....

    Yes

We like all our systems to have a nice view.

Yeah I noticed the transfer rate also

I was going to use the G115/34 oil boiler with the LT160 tank, but the vertical ST150 gets 20gph more for the same tank volume. I was also looking at the Crowm CT-4 oil boiler, with the MSH-40H horizontal tank. I have installed a few Crown CT Freeport boilers and I have noticed that the boiler casting is made by WESO of Germany. The Crown FW commercial boiler I installed is almost the same boiler block that Viessman sells- the Rondomat. Only the Rondomat seems to have more fins on the fire side casting.

    Hah! So tell me...

Do you screen prospective customers by whether or not they will let you install the boiler next to a window?

    I've used

A lot of them. I have always wondered how you would change out a leaker also. Maybe slide a couple steel bars under the boiler and lift it enough to slide the tank out with some jacks. ? All of these that I install go in with unions everywhere just for that reason.

I learned something about the glaze used on steel tanks years ago when I was buying water heaters from State Industries for our hardware store. The better the grade of glaze the more blue colored it is. It has to do with the amount of cobalt mixed into the porcelain. The cobalt resists checking and cracking due to temp variation extremely well. The glaze will be a deep shade of blue if it's a very high quality. Check out the interior of the boiler side piping on a Buderus tank and you'll see a nice dark blue color. Very high quality stuff used to line their tanks. By comparison if you get a chance to check out the interior of a standard hot water heater you'll notice it's a drab gray color. Virtually no cobalt in the mix at all.

Just as a note of interest, Buderus recommends cleaning the coil by draining the tank then circulating as water as hot as the boiler will make it, then spraying the coil with cold water to crack and remove the scale buildup. That says something about the confidence they have in their glazing.

    Just some food for thought.

    Stack your own

I build my own racks. This allows either component to be removed for service or replacement. I also add a drip pan under the boiler. This Raypak is stacked on stubby water heaters for buffers. Pic need a turn job, however. Quick easy and fun to mix and match.
