    popping noise

Have a gas boiler, operates ok, but has a "popping" noise coming from the boiler. Boiler about 20 yrs old, has a circulator, flow control valve on supply side, and expansion tank. Sounds like the water is boiling inside?
Temperature reads 165 and pressure 15. Any idea what is causing the noise and what to do to remedy the situatuion.

    Snap, Crackle, Pop...

You most likely have sediments built-up in the boiler. The popping sound is the water actually boiling inside. Could be lack of proper flow. You can try to raise the system pressure, about 20 psi at 180*F. may help... Better yet, upgrade to a new boiler. You'll save fuel, and keep America workin'... Good Luck... Scott G.

    A tough www. troubleshot

Noises are hard to hear on the 'puter screen :)

You really should get a pro to check this out. A low water condition can be a cause. Fouled heat exchangers, inadequate flow through a low mass boiler are a few ideas.

Left un-checked this could turn into a major problem. Make the call and get a few opinions.

All previous posts/answers are correct but if pressure and flow-rate are OK, I have been able to save several cast iron boilers by mixing "Sizzle" to the recommended dilution in a 5 gal. plastic bucket and using a stainless or bronze portable pump with hose adapters, we isolate the supply and circulate the solution through the boiler in & out of the bucket. Be sure and flush out after cleaning and add enough TSP to get the ph to 9. Good luck!

    Had the same

problem on 3 Slant Fin M# 100-150 boilers. All three were 20yrs old. Flushed, cleaned, different circulators, ph, no-burst, lowered temp, but....popping still there. Changed out the boilers and lowered HO fuel bills. Especially when I did a heat loss and installed smaller boilers. Patrick
