ASTM

We are working in a new jurisdiction this week and I asked the inspector if we could use PEX pipe for our primary piping. He said it was OK as long as it had the appropriate ASTM approvals. Got me to thinking: what are the correct approvals?

We are currently using two kinds of tubing; both have the same DIN approval - 4726, but they have different ASTM approvals. One has E-84 and the other one has F 876/877. Does anyone know the difference and which one is "correct"?

Best wishes,

Alan

    F876 - pipe spec
    F877 - system spec

Ask your pipe supplier for copies.

F876-01e1 is "Standard Specification for Crosslinked Polyethylene (PEX) Tubing
F877-02 is "Standard Specification for Crosslinked Polyethylene (PEX) Plastic Hot- and Cold-Water Distribution Systems

E84-01 is "Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials"

The "-01" or "-02" means they were last updated in 2001 or 2002 respectively.

I'll try to get an electronic version of the standards and e-mail them to you, but so far I haven't been able to do that. It seems like the F876/877 specifications would be what they would be most concerned about, but that's just a guess.

    Good Luck,
