Replacing iron pipes with copper?

I live in an old house built in 1823. Originally it was heated with 4 fireplaces. Somewhere in the last century a one pipe steam system was installed. The system is begining to show it's age. The two mains in the basement have been patched over the years in almost a dozen places to stop leaks.

My question is this. Can I replace the old 2 inch iron mains with new 2 inch copper and leave the risers iron? If so, is there a specific type/spec of copper pipe I should use for steam?

I would rather sweat the joints than try to redo the system in iron. Any help would be appreciated.

Mike
