Is there a problem with this valve, i have installed a fair amount now and to date no problems with any of them.
How ever my primary go-to supplier is no longer stocking them claiming too many problems with them, but does not cite any thing specific. has any other installer or service tech heard of any specific problems?, and does Taco have a reply to this?

You need to be pretty sharp to be able to

make them work with certain electronic thermostats, but outside of that I haven't heard anything but "wow, all of this and a competive price too." C

I have a job with electronic thermostats that operates at will sometimes. Are you saying that I should not use electronic T-stats with this system. I also have the zone control board.

We had a small radiator job where we used these zone valves; seems that we got a bad batch where the actual valves were manufactured a bit too tight and the motor in the actuator was not strong enough to turn it. The valves wouldn't close all the way which meant that you'd get flow through radiators even though the thermostat was off. This job had an indirect water heater and it would overheat; very dangerous and scared the hell out of me.

Taco stood behind their product, though. My supplier gave us new replacement valves plus a free one for every one that was defective and Taco said they would reimburse us for our time. That's the kind of support that keeps me coming back to Taco.

Taco said they fixed the problem and the new ones are fine.

The install department of my employer just started using these valves this year and I've already had two where the power head got stuck. One unit I was able to turn it manually and then it worked after that, and the other one could be manually operated but no automatic operation. We also put a bunch of these in the company presidents house, for his new system, and I feel sorry for Taco if one goes bad at his house. Also having complaints about the motor noise on these units, and I don't blame them, they are noisy!

Ultimatly, the valve looks nice, but needs some improvement, I.M.H.O.

    Response on ESP from Taco

Thank you for your interest in the ESP zone valve. After the initial release of the product, we found that in some applications the torque of the valve exceeded what the actuator was designed to turn. Most of the time this resulted in the valve not closing fully, keeping the end switch open and overheating the space.

We offered to replace any valves with an “O1” in the last four digits of the part number. We have hopefully taken care of anyone who had an issue. We have changed the teflon seating and ball interaction design, as well as plating the ball so no matter the installation the difference between the valve’s torque and what the actuator can turn has a large safety factor. These “new” valves have an “02” date code and have been shipping since November of 2001.

In terms of electronic thermostats, there are some that are not fully compatible with the ESP zone valve. Most of the issues are thermostats that use a cool anticipator in the cooling mode or power stealing thermostats (i.e. Erie T201,204,205,207 and Honeywell T8400 series). We include a resistor in the box to solve these thermostat issues. The only thermostat that is not compatible (where it needs an isolated relay, like what’s in the Taco ZVC-EXP controls) is the Honeywell T8112 thermostat. It leaks so much current across its circuitry that the valve thinks the thermostat is calling.

For a complete guide, Taco publishes a Thermostat Compatibility Reference Guide that can be obtained from the tech service department of Taco at 401-942-8000 or at your local wholesaler.
