any recommenadations for a new steam boiler

I need to purchase a new oil fired steam boiler. We have a Peerless that cracked. It was installed some time between 1988 and 1993 and serviced every year. It cracked and is sending steam up the chimney just llike Dan describes in the "Heating Q&A." We switched oil companies because our prior company couldn't or wouldn't diagnose the problem. Our new company says we need a new one and recommends a Weil-McLain SGO6 instead of another Peerless. Another local company recommends another Peerless. Does any one have any recommendations on which of these is better?

Both are fine. Compare price, efficiencies, and availability of parts. Peerless has been around a long time, but Weil/mclain is a very good boiler as far as efficiency goes..

    Steam Boiler replacement

As an installer we use Burnham boilers and Carlin burners.
Have found both to be very good as a set. But the best thing regardless of brand is a good installer. We are replacing a boiler Thursday which is only 3 years old due to faulty install and one next week only 10 years old same reason different brands. A good cast boiler should last 35+ years if maintained. Hope this helps John@Reliable

A Good Boiler is a Good Boiler

John's right, it's the installation that really counts!

Around Baltimore I see a lot of steam Burnhams, Weil-McLains, Slant/Fins, Columbias/Uticas (2 names for same boiler) and the occasional Dunkirk and Peerless. I don't think you could go wrong with any of these, as long as whatever you get is sized and installed properly.
