for responding,Timmie i plan on having someone follow me up on this call. Thank you Scott and others for your response. There is plenty of air, not in a confined space. As far as temperature, it is a cold start boiler with 2 small loops. 3/4 copper.

Iam new to gas heat. Sevice call for no heat. The rollout switch was bad & the flame was backing up into the cabinet of this Slant Fin boiler. So i cleaned the sections from top & bottom replaced the switch turned it back on & it is fine. Now my qestion, why did it make all this black soot? This is a hot water boiler controled by s8600,natural gas.

Many possible causes...
1. Is the boiler subjected to temps below 135* F. for long periods during operation?
2. Is there adequte combustion air in the mechanical room?
3. You need to provide more info.
4. MOST IMPORTANTLY... proceed with cause... for nat. gas to soot, yes you have problems... Scott G.0 -
Have a professional check your boiler
there is definitely something wrong anytime a piece of equipment oil or gas soots up. The danger of possible carbon monoxide should prompt you to call a pro and have them go right through the system. Where are you located? I am sure that someone on this site is perhaps near you and can assist you. If nothing else call your gas supplier.0 -

gas heat
just cleaned gas boiler found problem was gas valve replaced
last winter installer never checked the output of valve
came from factory set wide open unit sounded like a 747
revving its engines and lots of back pressure0 -
Whar kind of gas valve
was this. Was it a residential or commercial valve. I am curious as to how the valve was set wide open. Are you referring to the regulator adjustment being screwed all the way down giving excessive pressure?0 -
gas valve
timmie it was a honeywell 8600 series 24 volt the pilot flame was perfect every time the valve opened it was like a 747 was in the basement had to adjust the main pressure on valve0 -
Second time recently
with a Honeywell VR8300 series gas valve that out of the box was set to maximum pressure on the regulator. One of my students about a month ago brought this up and said that two other valves his company had in stock had the same problem. Honeywell responded that this was not something they had heard of and that they felt someone after production had done this. Something to keep an eye out for.0
