Fire in the hole !!

Be nice(G) since this is not a big part of my everyday work, this job was done across several weekends over the month or so (can we say budget) and we could not put in all the bells and whistles as we wanted !! But we managed ten zones of plated floor heat, with an indirect w/h powered by a laars jv series. everything is warming nicely and Mike is very warm and Happy!!
and yes scott, one leak on the copper piping !! (I think mike cleaned that one) at least that's my story ,and I'm sticking to it!!

Only one ?
Come on Murph tell the truth.
Who helped you with this job it looks really nice ?
Very nicly done and well thought out. I really like the plastic conduit for the pex. Is that what it is conduit ? Why not complete the gas pipe in steel you've gone that far ? Who's indirect is that ? Mega stor ?
Is this all radiant ?
One large ataboy !!
Scott

work of art!
bj,,
Long time but it will be worth every minute, the free ones are tuition, not lost.
Real class plumb, level, square and parallel. I know you turned the shells on the indirect and boiler loop pumps before you opened the ball valves.. right?
I got the parts I will get to it this weekend, Thanks I'll E mail you.

Looks like a lot of work!
Yeah, nice job! Nice and straight, level and plumb. Who's thermostats did you use? What type of radiant panels? It is such a nice job, but I think two of the taco circs need to be rotated so the junction boxes are on top. Should be easy w/ the ball valves. You know what I did last week? I did a boiler replacement and somehow installed the circ in reverse.....didn't see it until after purge aargh!

Nice work
Is that boiler aproved for installation on a combustible surface?0 -
Looks good, Murph!!!!
Now we know why you have been off the wall
and outa trouble lately!!! (G)
BTW....that isn't teflon tape on that gas line is it?????
Great work!!!

Fire in the hole
Steve, that is a very good question. From it's design, it does not appear that It would be, but then again, depends on the mfg spec.
Murph, is that Larrs JV boiler "LISTED" for installation on a combustible floor?

Ed Carey0 -
Easy on the eyes
I'm a little nervous about that low mass and all those zones. Is it a two stage fire, in that hole ? Nice looking piping.

well then.......
I thank you all for the compliments and will address the combustible surface issue immediatley !! I guess i should have cleaned up the place before taking the pics but wanted to get them posted once i seen this was actually going to work (G)!!
lets see if i can address all the questions!! scott all the help i needed i got from all you guys here on the wall. yes it is just conduit to keep the loops in order, the indirect is a megastor from crown and the whole house is plated pex and on slab heat. the circulators i think can only not be mounted is with tha cans down, but to avoid leaking issues i will swing them over. (never thought of that ,dont get many leaks)(G) No teflon on these fittings that stuff takes too long to get un-tangled from!! And yes we considered a buffer tank and will re-consider for the heating months and bypass for the summer!!
thanks all!!

Beatiful job
I especially like the neatness the conduits give the job. I'm definitly going to steal that idea and tell the homeowner I thought of it. Is there any problem with the tees being so far apart for each loop? I thought they had to be right next to each other for primary secondary loops. Wayco Wayne0 -
Nice Work
Hey Murph,
When I opened the first post, I did not notice the second attachment. The one that shows the entire view. That photo really shows the quality of your workmanship.
We all pick out little things that we criticize when we look at a job, but it is all done with good intentions.
I must say, that is really a beautiful job. If I were you, I'd be proud to show a photo of that job to anyone.
Best Regards,
Ed Carey0 -
Murph.........do you ever get a whistling sound on your boilers by using the flex connectors?
since I stopped using flex and now use solid piping, the whistling sound stopped.
very nice looking install!!!!!

Does a newbie understand?
Wow...that looks really nice.
I am a newbie...so let me see if I understand what I am looking at.
Primary loop pump is over the boiler. The DHW pump is over the DHW tank. 2 3-way mixing valves are used to lower temp for the zones...must be multiple zones running off two different temperatures. Zone relay boxes on the wall...
One question: Is the DHW tank supposed to turn on, maybe under priority and shut off the other primary loop pump, on call for DHW? They way it looks to me, looks like the DHW pump would pump water in its own little loop, not necessarily pumping hot water through the boiler primary loop explicitly.
What am I missing??
That's one fine installation to be proud of!

FIRE IN YER HOLE!!!!
Excellent job Murph!!!!!!!!
Not as complicated as some gravity conversions, but beautiful nonetheless!
I am glad that this project had a HAPPY ending!!

Sherrif....
That's some darn good lookin pipin'. Dodgin' them there black biguns' seems to be the toughest part of the job .(damn plumbers ...always laying their stuff right in our way !) NICE. Chris. P.S. , Don't let the Chowdahead get on your case , we can deal with him later .Forgetaboutit0 -
as we discussed
the best conversion a gravity system would be to reverse circulate the rads.
with a auto-matic reversing control, that could be done with a presure differential by-pass connected to the secondary injection loop right after the system check modual. It all stands or falls with the placement of the Primary Differential Regulator.
The Cross Over reversing valve will tolerate a small amount of cavitation, but will simply stop operating when the diffusion rates jump above 2.37 mgs/min, now what i dont understand is how the gi=ot can be measured??
It is imperative that laminar flow be maintained through the heat transfer medium, while turbulent flow would be preferred in the transitional zones, what do you think??
In gravity conversions, the density of the applied coverings should also be considered. A radiators specific heat output generation is directly affected by the thickness of any surface coverings such as paint, what a pain that could be to remove!!
Outdoor reset controls are not only unneccessary in gravity conversions, but may also hasten the deterioration of the connected cast iron heat transfer medium, unless of course properly treated and maintained!!
With higher levels of O2, the oxidation rate will increase with lower water temps, not to mention the condensation problems.that could be done with proper pump sizing and of course the piping!! thanks again!

i put that there
before i made concessions to get another six feet of wall needed, talk about trying to shove seven pounds in a two pound box Yeeesh!!0 -
thanks bruce
did i mention this is a work in progress!! i did this job with the homeowner knowing that i "NEED" to add and delete things at will, the indirect is controlled with a priority setting that can be turned on or off, another chip (safety) will only leave the priority run for an hour then kik the heating circs back on ,the primary will still run it is controlled at the boiler and must circulate the low mass water ,i was talked out of adding some more mass by a local rep but may consider adding it later with a manual by-pass for off season!!0 -
is that ..
the ERIE priority plus relay?0 -
THANKS ED
I will address this issue, and it is great to have a place where you can get critisism/advise for some things that may get overlooked in haste of trying to the system up and running (picky homeowners) and after a two week wait to get a conversion kit, things were getting a little chilly!! originally ordered in august, now I know how you feel al!0 -
Kevin that
is a taco 506 EXP ,it does six zones each and we had to piggy-bak them together!! it has a priority circuit for domestic and is expandable for out-door reset and a priority cut-out. i put one similar in my home about three hundred years ago and it never misses, everyone likes the lites which are on the out side of the box now!!0 -

may i say what an excellent work of art,it has amazed me over the years that everything has to be installed in such a way but all the guys do it in a different way, their own signuture to a job,i am doing a job at the moment,my first real big job, will of course post it on here once done, well murph as we say in england top ole old boy super old chap,a huge pat on the back my friend for such a superb job.
take care my friend
all the best

ahh..
you added the cards...nice relay that taco. did you put in the post purge one too? it would be nice w/ the jv set up.. nice job.. ps is it a lp or nat gas boiler? kpc0 -

thanks gary
good to see you back more often, this one was fun yet time consuming because of the room allowed, actually i finish these then want to rip them apart and start over!! once they see what you can do, they will unleash you on the city gary, take care

Ahh! Laminar flow!!
You know I have been thinking a lot about this in the past few weeks.
While turbulent flow would be preferred for better BTU transmission, I think that noise would be a big issue.
So we will continue to maintain laminar flow through the transfer medium.
As for the gi=ot measurement, I have a friend working on it.
Great work!!!!!
