Vertical Air Separator (Steamhead)

an air separator that can be installed in a vertical 1-1/4" pipe, and hooked up to a plain steel compression tank? I looked at a job today where the boiler room is really cramped and there may not be enough room to properly install a horizontal unit.

Thanks in advance.

    air seperator

Does B&G still make the vertical 1 that screws in the supply tapping of the boiler? Think it has a tapping that was piped to an expansion tank.

    Vertical air eliminators

I had an application for a verical Spirovent and called the supply house and was informed Spirovent only makes 'em in 1 inch. I've gotten bad information before and never did follow up on it. I'd be interested to know if someone does make one larger than one inch myself. Guess I'll check back on this tread. thanks

    Got your answer right here

Bell & Gossett makes just what your looking for. It is called "ABF Airtrol Fitting" Install it close to the boiler on bottom of supply header, the tank tapping is on the side (fitting looks like a T) it doesn't take up much room at all. Make sure to use the "ATF Airtrol fitting on the compression tank fitting on the bottom. Slope pipe down to the "ABF" fitting, you can T of this line to install the boiler feed. As always pump away from the "ABF" fitting and viola.

the Taco Vortec is supposed to be able to bo installed
right after an elbow and still work.... I did it and it worked fine.
None of that 18" deal and it has a 3/4 tapping for the vent!!!!
    Works like a charm!!!!!
    Look Ma!!! No air!!! :-)

What the heck.... just turn the amtrol on it's side!!!!!!!!!
At least the scoop is vertical then!!!!!
By golly it LOOK'S like it should work!!!! :-)

    fittings

The older system 90 degree flow checks that sit on top of the boiler riser pipe and have a side tap for a standard expansion tank should fit the bill as the expansion tank is meant to catch the air in the system. Don.
't know if the manufacturers still stock as the younger counter guys look at me like I'm using larger quantities of the drugs that they are on.( only way that I can explain some of the absurdity that come out of the hole in the front of the lump on their shoulders)

    air scoop on the vertical

Didn't we just see a fine example of a air scoop running North and South?

    This is a most reliable

This is a most reliable combination . I have quite a few older units wit this set up . They work great. Are they still available? The " air scoop" screws rigfht into the boiler.

    Still available

I just bought this exact setup to upgrade a system that had just a T installed for the expansion tank, homeowner had to empty the expansion tank twice a year. I installed these B&G fittings two years ago and have'nt had to empty tank yet.... I love to go back to a system I worked on just to see how things are.

    Vertical air separators

I just attended a B&G class and was told that the old Airtrol fitting that screwed into the top of the boiler is no longer available, although you still might be able to find an old one on a shelf somewhere. The closest thing B&G has is the EAS-1¼" (Enhanced Air Separator) which has inlet taps on the side and bottom but the outlet is only on the side, like a flow control. it has a ¾" tap on top that can be run to an expansion tank. You can also still get the ATF tank fitting to set the proper air level in the tank. There is also the B&G IAS 1¼" which is a horizontal unit with a ¾" tap on top and a ½" port on the bottom. It measures 6-1/8" long X 3½" high. As far as Spirovent, my catalog says the vertical sizes are only ¾" and 1" and both of those have NO expansion tank tap. And don't bother looking at Spirovents website, they don't show any kind of vertical unit at all.

    Your right

I just called a few supply houses here and they say the same thing, I guess I got lucky that time. Why doesn't B&G make the ABF anymore?

I don't know for sure but my thinking is the growing trend to use microbubble air elimination and diaphram expansion tanks. The EAS I described above is a very close equivalent to a Spirovent, and I just saw an add in a trade magazine for an EAS Junior that looks almost exactly like a Spirovent. It comes down to whatever removes the air the best is what sells. And looking at the success of Spirovent air eliminators, this type is what everybody will be going to.
