before she bought the house. She really didnt remember, but the important thing is getting it straightened out- which we'll do.

If the system was that way when she bought the house, I wonder if she had an inspection done and if so, whether the inspector caught it.

There's a lot of sloppy work in that house. But that's why we're here! ;-)

Owner was complaining about noisy baseboards. Can you see why?

    love the soldering job too!

I am getting a digital camera this week, you wouldn't believe the stuff I have been running into.

its a shame that there are those that install equipment like this, and have NO CLUE what they are doing!

How this stuff happens is beyond comprehension

If this doesn't bring a tear of joy to your eye I don't know what would. What was the story you heard after the laughter subsided?

    uh....

The phrase "why bother" is quite at home describing that air scoop.....in my area nobody can afford to use valves to isolate the boiler, and or other components.....but they can afford to watch me wait for a four story converted gravity rad system empty just to replace a circ.

    cheer up !

at least the flow check is in the right position, and the circ. motor isn't pointing straight up.

That system is really screwed up

the same lack of intelligence appears in other parts of that system. Stop/waste valves on the loop returns, purge valves installed the wrong way, and a total of 3 3/4-inch loops coming together into a 3/4" return line!

The lady wasn't sure who did what, but I told her we'd make it work properly.

Yes, that is a Taco 110 circ. After years of straining to move the water thru that screwed-up system, the seal started leaking, which is why we were called. I'll probably put a 0010 on when we repipe it- Pumping Away of course.

I keep a file called "things I've never done" and this is going in it. It will sit next to my current favorite, the photo of the mitered light switch cover plate. The switch was close enough to a corner in the wall that the contractor cut the switchplate, mounted the "extra" part on the angled wall, and caulked the joint!

    Amazing stuff.

    engineered excellence

That gas line is a work of art too! Oh well gas is dangerous ,it blows houses up for no reason. At least somebody was lubricating the circ.motor.

    The vent piping

is my favorite. I wonder if the manufactuers literature showed an elbo right on top of the jacket. Sadly, there's plenty of room for a 2' connector rise if the knowledge had been there. Of course the vent hanger "system" he used is also worthy of my "good bad example" file along with the invisible union and dirt leg on the gas line. Truely you can't make this stuff up.

Why did the homeowner use this contractor?

I've run into this type of work once in a while and a local man was often doing the work. When I asked why the homeowner chose this contractor, I was told that he had a number of prices and he picked the cheapest. This happened from two different individuals, so while I have a lot of sympathy for people who pay a fair price and look for a reliable contractor, I think that some people get the job that they deserve and are willing to pay for.

  • whats up with the waterheater flue pipe also

yup, the boilers is a piece of work, the waterheater flue looks weird also, is it going into a smaller pipe on the left end or is it just an optical illusion thing? looks to long to vent right...nice hangars on it also....not..hehe
