Burnham V34 Vapor Piping

I really thought it was newer than that. But it has a Wayne flame-retention burner on it (which appears original), so its AFUE should be pretty decent if it's kept in tune.

This is yet another older Burnham that has held up quite well, especially considering the lousy original piping job. Can't argue with that kind of success.

    You've seen the \"before\" pic

but here it is again. The pipe going into the side of the steam riser from the boiler was the only way condensate could return!

    Note the later-model Differential Loop.

At long last, here are the \"after\"pics

Glenn Stanton sent me the piping diagram and here's the result. That's a 3-inch header, feeding 2 2-inch steam mains and dropping into a 2-inch equalizer and a proper Hartford Loop. Camera batteries ran out the day we repiped it and this is the first time I've been back.

    Thanks, Glenn.

    showing the Differential Loop.

We'll be replacing the trap elements and dry return vent on this system soon. It really banged before we repiped it which knocked out a few of the old Hoffman #18 traps. We'll use Barnes & Jones Cage Units on this job since Hoffman doesn't make their Bear Trap units for the old #18 traps. We'll also install a Gorton #2 vent on the dry return, to replace a leaky Hoffman #75.

This system is in an upscale rowhouse in Baltimore's Tuscany-Canterbury neighborhood. Once we get this system sorted out, I'll bet we get to work on some of the neighbors' systems.

  • Now thats how

A steam header is supposed to look . I only hope that the customer can hang on to the boiler long enough to enjoy the newly silent heat . How old is the boiler ?

    Not sure how old

but it looks like it's in decent shape. Assuming it's properly maintained it should last a while.

  • The V-3 boiler

probably was installed sometime during the 60's or 70's making it at least 30 years old. With proper care and maintainance, cast iron steam boilers can last a fairly long time and apparently this one is proof of that. Thanks for caring enough to make this one perform better. Many would not have taken the time or patience.
