Chimney liner

I went back today to the job to seal some holes. The homeowner said they had been experiencing headaches but had not attributed them to anything like flu gasses in the house. I think I deserve a gratuity, don't you?? Oh well I guess the satisfaction of a job well done is enough.

Chimney liner
Today my helper and I had to pull a chimney liner for a masonry chimney. Not my favorite thing to do but it turned out to be very important. People had just moved in this summer. They had me check their furnace out and I found a rusty crack in their heat exchanger. I turned off the gas and said call me in the Fall. Today I went up on the roof only to find the chimney totally plugged in 5 different places. My helper first though there was a nest blocking the top. I went up and scooped it out of the way only to find another matt of leaves straw and twigs about 4 feet down. I got a stick and poked at it till I got through it. By then I had a drop light hanging down so I can see and find another blockage 10 ft down. I tied a 3 foot pipe wrench to a rope and began dropping it down on top of this mulch plug until I busted through only to find another one. After clearing through 5 blockages we made it through to the crock, ran the liner, and all is OK. I told the lady about it and she mentioned she had bought carbon monoxide detectors when they moved in but had not gotten around to installing them. Good gravy this could have been bad. If they had just turned on the furnace and never had it checked they could have filled the house up with flue gas in no time. The clay liner was installed improperly with none of the tiles lining up well so the edges of the tiles could catch sticks and leaves and all that. I've never seen a chimney so blocked.0 -
This is why we should...
inspect every chimney. Good work Wayne that was a good catch you probably saved some lives. By the way that stuff could also have caught on fire.0 -

venting sound good...although that has it own set of issues...good work!0
