Mennonite hydronics - PAH

You can't criticize these people just because the are living in an era two centuries behind us. They are craftsmen of the highest caliber; especially when it comes to woodworking! They hold on to some values that would probably solve a lot of today's problems. They value the family and hard work to get through life. They expect an honest day's wage for an honest day's work. Would you expect less? They work together and get the job done. They click like a well-oiled machine. When disaster strikes, they band together and help the unfortunate; Mennonite, Amish, Jew, or Christian- no distinction! How many of us do that? So when they want it painted black- paint it black. Mick Jagger wrote a song about that. Just remember; put your name on the job, do it right, be a craftsman, give 110% for what you got paid for; and you will never be hurting for work. Too many people out there trying to screw the other guy. Makes our trade look bad!!!!!!!!

Help - I need a bunch of black paint!

OK, so we'll be painting our trucks black and that includes the bumpers. Met with a Mennonite group today & they're about as conservitave as you can get. Guess what boiler they specified on their print? The Munchkin!!! Does that come in black?(G) Wow. If these folks are embracing the new technology, then all of the US boiler manufacturers better sit up and take notice.

Actually makes perfect sense if you stop to contemplate the Mennonite's conservative ideology. They're planning on being frugal with the fuel too!

painting everything black, are there any other requirements for you and your workmen, like don't look at their women, no profanity?

There is always the peerless Pinnacle. Its Dark Green (I believe) and has a ASME stamp.

Wool pants, wool buttoned suit jacket - no collar with white starched shirt - again, no collar. Black shoes. Wide brimmed hat. No profanity, no smoking, no nonsense! This is for their new school & although we'll be supplying the boiler (if we're chosen), their craftsmen will be installing the remainder of the heating system. In fact, the plumbing is the only trade they won't be performing with their own people. All of this is scheduled for Thanksgiving week (aprox), so I'm anxious to do this job and observe, first hand, how they celebrate the holiday. Who knows. I might just learn a new appreciation for our many blessings. The present church with basement school is right there too, so we'd get to know the students too - hopefully.

    Wool itch

If black denim will work for pants and jacket , I've gota couple of black stetsons, several pairs of black boots and lots of shirts with no collars. Would even toss the PallMall's for a day or two for an interesting project . If you need an extra body holler.

    Mennonite??

I think what you are describing is Amish characteristics. I might be wrong, but I believe Mennonites aren't as conservative as Amish. Mennonites will use electricity and drive cars, wear "regular" clothes (altho they wont dress like Brittany Spears).

Amish wear the plain black and white clothes with no buttons etc etc.

    Depends on the Amish

This community has a horse powered timber frame shop. No power or gas. They do have a cell phone however.

The horses spin a turnstile which goes to a 10 speed spicer tranny which turns a jackshaft with flat leather belts driving various saws, drills and planers. Barefooted kids 16 and up operate the power tools, the younger childern mind the horses, and handle farm chores.

The are very well versed with power tools although they only use power tools owner by the GC and on the jobsite. Once they are driven back home and step out of the Suburban shuttle cars it's a different ball game :) Hard workers, polite, and excellent craftsmen for the most part. A little lax on the safety end of things.

    Depends on which \"brand\".....

There are many different grades or brands of both the Amish and Mennonite sects.
Haivng grown up in the Mennonite church I am very familiar with many of them, but never
was able to figure out all of the different belief's that all of them have.....
That being said, you will never find a harder working bunch of guys or ever question their heart and
    intelligence.
Have you ever seen a barn, I mean a BIG barn go up in a day with about a 100 men all having a job
to do and not a one of them standing around playing pocket pool???
Oh yeah, and at those barn ras'ins all the women make more food and the best food you could ever
    imagine!!!!!!

go for it Dave, it will be a great experience!!!!

    Floyd!

Hey buddy... what "brand" were you? Are you still one? Where at? I grew up Mennonite too! Strict. No black cars required but to hell you go if you had white side walls on your tires!

They are known as the \"Low Amish\"

If you are talking about the ones around Seymour and Mansfield. You also have Mennonites in that area. My cousins live there. Been to Rogersville/Seymour/Ada many times.

The reason they are called "Low Amish" (I don't know how to spell the German word but know how to say it!) is that they are proud to be humble. To "Low Amish" dirtyness is a sign you are humble. I have been in their church services and some of them reek of barnyard oders. When I was a kid we used to drive around on Sat. nights looking for young lads with radios playing in their buggy. We would then yell in their language that we were going to tattle on them. Youthful indiscretions!

    Strict also...

Plains coats for the men, cape dresses and coverings for the women...
Later in my teens moved to more liberal congregation...
Grew up in southeastern Pa. around 30 mi. north of philly.
Now, not Mennonite, but still have some very strong conservative
    beliefs.
Wouldn't want to trade my heritage.....has many good points!!!!

Yup, Miller, a great Mennonite name!!!
    I have a sister-in-law that was a Miller.

I'm at the same place you are in my beliefs, etc. I was part of Nationwide Fellowship which is similar to Eastern PA Mennonite Conference.

  • Mennonites are great

people. I had the privlege of working with them in Africa on a mission project. They are hard workers and very industrous people. I must say there are various differences in each group as to beliefs. A man by the name of Gerald Durstin started a community in Florida that I spent some time with. As deeply commited as they are they are some of the most enjoyable people I have ever spent time with. And believe it or not they have a lot of fun. I spent one night out in a village in Africa with two of them and we shared funny stories about our lives and I never laughed so much in my life.

    Have fun Dave.

    Amen to that

One of my cousins married a Mennonite girl from Lancaster County and they are now missionaries in Thailand. We sure did get some great new relatives thru that marriage.
