Toilet Problem

Went to plbg.com and it was gone!
Problem: American Standard Plebe (about 1982) long bowl, tank-type toilets. CANNOT FIND A FLAPPER TO WORK!!! Have tried SIX different ones to no avail. This includes two from the American Standard dealer (2nd of which was supposedly the "original" (with a little float) but it NEVER had that thing originally!!!!
Flapper seat sits at a marked angle, so I can't use the "flusher-fixer" type without replacing the bowl/tank connection. Flappers have two problems: most common is that it is made from too soft a material and you literally have to hold the handle down during the entire flush lest it close prematurely; other problem is that some flappers do not seal properly--yes the seat is fine.
These are in my bar and it's driving me crazy and water bills are outrageous.
Any suggestions GREATLY appreciated.

Mike,
Make sure you get a Korky PLUS flapper that is not for a low-gallon flush water closet. A well-stocked plumbing service contractor should have what you need.
I think your WC is a 3.5 gallon flush. However, if it is a 5 gallon flush, you would need the Korky CLASSIC PLUS...I think.
Good luck.

adjustable flapper
At a local privately owned home center I found a adjustable flapper. You turned the cone on the bottom to adjust when it closed. It work so neat! I've been lokking for them but can't find anymore.0 -
flapper
make sure you remove the rubber over flow tube guide and hang the flapper on the two hooks provided this may help
if the wc is a 3.5 or larger change it and reallysave water

at what point...
do you give up and either repalce the whole flush valve or do you call it quits and replace the whole toilet. Labor costs and the water bills will make the band aid approach more expensive. hope this helps. kpc0 -
toilet prob
Try Wolverine brass plumbing, they sell a wide array of material we commonly use. Very high quality, good prices, and they don't sell to homeowners, building contractors, hardware stores, & most important of all, home centers!!!0 -
Hope I can help
If possible take a pic of the original flush valve, or inside the tank. American Standard has many variations, I have an old Creed (Now Plumbmaster) book that has just about every flushvalve, and toilet parts ever made. I could match something up.

Shouldn't be that hard?
You already got all the good suggestions you need.
As far as plbg.com - There was some flaming going on. They delete posts and posters when that happens. I think they deleted a zillion imformative posts by accident. IMHO it's censorship, but it's their site and they promote benevolence and sometimes posters get childish.
Just thinking out loud, have you checked that the refill tube isn't below the waterline of the tank and siphoning water out.0 -
Flapper
try www.hodesco.com .In the catalogue (Mine is Jan/June 2002) pg.35 -42 is a nice assortment of flappers pg. 42 shows a couple of different am. st. versions that they say are not available from american standard . If you decide to change that hopper out go with a flushmate pressure assisted tank or a TOTO hopper Rots a ruk!0 -
THANKS ALL
Will see if a photo will come out--will also give tank number. Am still amazed that given this info the local Am. Std. dealer can't supply/won't order.
Have same problem with other toilets (older) in different locations that use the Am. Std. black "actuating unit." They come in two geometric variations and believe it or not, Lowes is the ONLY place around here that has them both!0 -
I will never
The one thing that I think think this country is known for in the world of plumbing is our toilets. I have been to Europe, and every stinkin' washdown toilet has a smelly toilet brush next to it. Yeah the Toto is a decent toilet, but have you ever tried finding replacement parts. I think the new breed of Kohler, American Standard, Gerber, and of course the flushmate units are the ticket. I have installed 12 Western toilets in an Inn and have had very good results- too bad the castings are foriegn. There is also a new company called Vortex, I saw it in action at a local supply house.
Sorry for the extended dissertation....I still remember being in my uncle's home in Greece and having to brush doo doo
