Cleaning Steam Boiler

Member Posts: 1
Was wondering if anyone could tell me if cleaning a steam boiler will help surging and pipe banging....
I was told that "in the old days" people didn't do that much in terms of boiler cleaning and water draining/cleaning...
Is it harmful to a new boiler to every year or so to completely drain down and clean boiler with "boiler cleaner".....
Last year I installed a new Weil-McLain boiler...one pipe steam...installed did not skim boiler....I had a lot of problems with surging and dirty sight glass...and low water cut off...
I was told to clean boiler....so yesterday I completely drained system.....took off relief valve...poured in cleaner...and fired up boiler....I then attached an elbow and 3 foot section of pipe to relief and proceded to let water....crude ..oil...and yes a bit of steam blow out....
Water still seems dirty...I was told to keep doing this till I get water clean...
Question...Does boiler water need to be as clean as possible....in order to stop surgin and banging..
I had very good results last year when boiler water was clean...did not have banging and low water/surging problems..

I encourage you
to get a copy of The Lost Art of Steam Heating, John. It covers all these issues at length. You'll find it in Books & More.Retired and loving it.0 -
Ditto- and
if you still have trouble, have one of the contractors from The Wall (use the Find a Contractor page of this site) come look at it.
If a steam system bangs, it's telling you something is wrong, and it may take a good steam man to decipher the problem. A well-operating steam system is as quiet as a hot-water system, and just as economical to run assuming the boilers are similar.
If you're in the Baltimore area, just e-mail me.
