Is swimming pool water potable?

we are converting a pool heating system to utilize campus heating hot water with chemical treatment in the heating hot water. The UMC requires a double wall heat exchanger for potable water heating with chemically treated water... it seems the pool should be treated as potable, but i don't find a definite answer - any thoughts?
thanks.

All pool hx I have seen are double wall, also look at material selection to deal with chlorine. Most I have seen are titanium.

    OPEN SYSTEMS

Remember pools are open systems and open systems will bite you in the rear.

Be careful with pool water piping to avoid trapping air and relative pressure, its not a pressurized closed piping system, its an open piping system.

    As far as.....

the plumbing code is concerned as soon as it leaves a faucet it is no longer potable...a pool is no more a potable source than a bath tub would be....we are required to have air gaps on all tub faucets....kpc

    More thoughts...

Pools typically have a higher residual of chlorine than potable water...I hate blanket statements, but it's about twice as much. Also, if you have a DE (diatomascious earth) filter, you may tend to get the residual from that after a backwash - giving a slightly turbid look for a short period. And of course, there are the inevitable "internal bodily fluids" :-)

In addition to the other (good) comments, I hope this helps. Take Care, PJO
  • people pee in pools

    i'd say non-potable
