This was one of those jobs where you go for a service call and it ends up being a big job. A local trane dealer decided to install 5 tons of a/c on this 50' era oil furnace. Of course with 24- 4" supply runs they were lucky if they have enough air flow for half that tonnage. So 4 in warranty compressors later the homeowner decided something was going on. I removed that oil furnace and split up the air distrubution into two separate systems. I had to add 3-6" supply runs, and 5-7" supply runs just to get enough air. This wasn't easy as it is an old split level home, we tore down alot of plaster inthe finished basement and lower level sitting room ceilings just to get the extra ductwork in. The two hot water coils take care of the heat for now, but next year hopefully I will be adding radiant heat, towel warmers, and radiators....gotta get rid of scorched air wherever I find it......

    Pretty neat work

    Hey Casmo,

    Very very nice

Hydro isn't as bad as scorched. It doesn't dry out near as much.

Nothing better than radiant when done correctly. Good luck

Here it is with the correct spelling

    Nice work

Very nice layout. I really like the insulation.

Make sure you wipe those joints or in two years the flux will turn them green, and eat away at them.

    destructive?

Several factory solder joints in the rerigerant tubing in my Spacepak air handler (most notably the TXV equalizer line) are covered with the green crud. Everyone I've talked to about this so far has indicated that it's cosmetic and can be ignored.

I take it you don't agree with that opinion? There was an earlier thread here on the wall about cleaning up such joints - sounds like I should follow some of the suggestions there.

    galvanic corrosion

Considering moving the galv flex away from your copper lines. This can cause pin holes in your copper. A little moisture between the copper and flex will also cause a reaction on the outside of the tube. Zinc and copper under the right circumstances will not get along. Just a thought.

I know it looks like it is touching but I have 1/4 inch space where the combustion air duct runs, and gasket mat. everywhere else. This was one of my first lessons from my dad when I was his gopher....

Yes, can you believe what culligan does? I am replacing the water softener nxt week, it is scary to think how many of these simple mistakes I have seen. That is why I belive no one other than a licensed master plumber should be allowed to touch a plumbing system......I could go on...

    odor

    casmo,

My sister in-laws husband( notice I didn't say brother in- law) gets picky and tries to find fault with every thing he has to pay for to try to get out of paying full price. (chiseler) If he does pay full price , he will hound you and waste your time to make sure you don't make a penny on "him".

Let's just say the story was ????? you know!

Shoot from the hip? (G) hmmmm!

    No, but

I will be working on that one next month, for now they promised to remove all flammables. I pushed it back because they left on vac. I still have to talk to a Riello rep.... If I were to order the 40b burner with the sealed box, how long of an intake run can I have? I will have a developed length of about 30'. I am glad you reminded me, I will call tomorrow. I would hate to go ahead and do it and then not be able to pull in enough air.... Have you done this before?

    What I meant was

the ability to tell people what is really on your mind, instead of being polite to the point you want to throw up. Usually it is not hard, but last year I replaced an old boiler with a new unit, I am still dealing with the fact that the increased noise in the chimney (replaced old 1750rpm burner with beckett afg spinning at 3450) will not shake loose the ornate terracato chinmey extension piece on the top of her chimney....If that ever falls in a storm or from old age I will never hear the end of it.......
  • al we have all had

a go at the time wasters, the question is where do you draw the line at how much your are willing to put into
a job after it is finished. Sometimes folks seem to think that since you are in buisiness that they are entitled to free advice and the assumption that we are sponsered by the government somehow!! Plenty of folks out there believe that they are entitled to free drawings and designs. They think that we should design the system and then give them instructions on how it should be done. Well, if it was that easy, anybody could do it.

We were on a new sewer install today. (Township finally extended the mains into some problem areas )HO comes up and says I am down the road & am doing my own install since there is nothing to it , but do I have to use a curb trap? their expensive! How do I put it in ? how am I supposed to make a bend , and do I really need all those cleanouts like they have on the spec drawing? My answer was to hand him a buisness card and tell him that the customer was paying me to work on his project not educate the AllKnowing.
  • got em

everywhere eh', or the guy that says no one will call me back. "who does your regular service?" cannot believe that there are homes that have been standing and they never need service.

    I can't take it anymore!!!!

I have watch your posts, Mark, for some time now.....
your e-mail address is for some higher institution of learning
seems to me that you are the typical HO that has way too much time on your hands!!!!! Will youever figure out that you are the intelectual type and that maybe the work that needs to be done by our hands should be left to those with mechanical minds!!!! Some things just are not logical to guys like you!!!!
You obiously worry way to much about things that don't matter!!!!!
You seem to be the perfect example of the kind of customer that I really dread coming in contact with....
you know just enough to be dangerous, but not enough to do things yourself, and would love to go screwing around with everything after I leave and then call me back to fix it up again for FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry about the rant.... this has been building for quite awhile and I just had to vent!!!!

    trip

    bj,

Welcome back, I sincerely hope you had a pleasant trip and you and your spouse are still speaking.

I don't know how the Wall survived with both of it's principles out of town at the same time.

Yes there were some close calls.

    If you increase.........

the intake from 3" to 4" you probably won't have a problem. I have never had a run that long...only about 15'. I have done something similar to what you showed w/o any problems. Good luck, kpc

sure has been working overtime - imagining all sorts of things that have no basis in fact.
