Steam Install Labor Estimates

Hi all. I am back in the biz (after taking a summer long sabbatical) working for a fairly good size contractor here in 51 town. A heart-felt thanks again to those that offered me employment and referrals in addition to encouragement to stay in our industry, it was amazing!!

Is there any info/calculators/software available to help estimate the labor required on a residential steam application?

    Steam Replacement Labor?

This should cover up to 6 section
Clean & remove 11/2hrs. / add 1 hr. if breaking into sections. Move new one in package unit and pipe 4hrs.
Electric wiring 1hr. New oil line fittings etc. 1hr.
Tankless piping 1hr. Firing & set-up 3/4hr. Skimming? 1-2 hrs. Now that I look at it now I know why it takes all day! Hope this helps. P.S. When we can we do removal late afternoon day before install, this way you start out fresh some removals can really take it out of you!

I suspect the above numbers are for a two man team

Working myself, I could never get it done that fast! BTW does this include things like installing king valves, skim valves and piping, Return valves, new header (since many I see don't have one or it is piped wrong), new vents, and auto fill valve?

    Hey Boilerpro

I cut out old headers, risers, and returns.I use only Burnham boilers so 90% of piping is always the same.I start with supply risers with unions and only have to pipe to equalizer which I buy as nipples and fittings always the same way,now I only have to pipe returns to hartford real time saver. Must admit don't always skim, some good chemicals do the job on most. Have done some by myself in 8 hours,(remove day before). Also fhw units (push&pull) in 4 hours. Most of the time helpers get in the way,but great to load the van up and clean up John@Reliable

Depends on how thorough you want to go

...a basic job could be done in one long day, but when you start to give them the extras like a larger header, back up lwco, king valves, skimmer station, you are pushing onto another day.....when we do a steamer we figure for two days, because that is what it takes to do the extras and I usually spend 4-6 hours the second day just cleaning the system, skimming, and re-balancing all the radiators......Mad Dog
