    Does this mean

that the Trane installers working with Home Depot won't be showing Weil-McLain boilers in the stores, or is that their independent choice to make?

    Now all we need

is for W-M's people to work the Wall like Burnham's and Slant/Fin's people do (and Smith and Dunkirk, to a lesser extent).

Or is it that I haven't seen when they do work the Wall?

    Well......

I can tell you that the local WM dealer was EXTREMELY adamant about the letter.

Must be that picture that was posted of the car with the LGB on it??

    Oh well.

Any bets on who the replacement partner will be??

    WM

I have never seen people from WM at the Wall or anywhere else on line. Their on line tech support in the past has left a lot to be desired. It didn't suprise me that they wanted to prostitute themselves in the HD deal. The other companies have been way too classy for such things.

  • I have asked the local WM

people to come on the Wall several times. I am going to be with them soon and will see if I can set a little fire under them.

I have always had very good relations with them locally. I have known the local manager Dave Walsh since he was a teen working in the trades. I am sure it can be accomplished when I tell them of the opportunity to reach such a large audience.

    Well,

they're business people and they weighed their options. I think that the people the president mentions in his letter represented a LOT of weight.

Great to see you this weekend, Leo. Thanks for taking the time to chat with me. I really enjoyed that.

    So

What is happening is that W-M started offering boilers for sale through HD and now W-M has backed out of the partnership? How long did that last, about one month? I smell a story here.

    HD to Keyspan?

We had some brief discussion on the wall this past weekend after seeing the same memo. How will WM weigh in when it comes to "just say no" to the Keyspan organization?

    That remains to be seen

And the KeySpan issue is by far more important than all the Home Depots and Lowes in America. You can compete with the home centers. You can't compete with this KeySpan thing and I fear that this one is slipping under the radar. Not enough contractors and wholesalers realize the impact the DIRECT sale (no contractors or wholesalers involved) of $80 million dollars worth of boilers will have on this industry. Once those boilers are delivered KeySpan can send them anywhere in the country. And if you're in the East, you'll find yourself competing with KeySpan-owned service-and-installation companies that will have access to those economies of scale. You'll be buying boilers one at a time from a wholesaler. They'll be buying $80 million dollars worth directly from the manufacturer.

    Lots of luck, pal.

Personally, I think that the boiler manufacturer that takes that direct business will be hated by contractors and wholesalers for generations to come.

You know what? Sometimes you just have to stand up and say, "Screw."

I hope our friends in the boiler business will have the courage to do that.

    The Weil folks

had a presence in the early "Wall" days. As I recall they took a bunch of attacks and some cheap shots. Guess we all have a break point.

Trust me, they are watching and responding to problems :)

    Thank You

    Dan,
You recognized me never having met me. The honor was mine. This weekend was the best event related to business I have been to, both in this field and in my former field. Thanks for putting it together.

    Working without a net here.

So for the sake of argument, the XYZ boiler co makes a deal to produce "X" amount of boilers for Keyspan in a years time. The hiring of cheap labor ensues, quality control manager and staff look the other way to make quota for the month, and the fur will fly. Service is at a premium to repairreplace these "ultra" inexpensive boilers that Keyspan negotiated for. How much of this time is going to be done on your nickel?

I do think this is a juggernaut of an issue, but if we can stick together, we won't be relegated to be installers much like the electricians were. How many of you can remember selecting and purchasing light fixtures through your electrician? I know I can't.

    we have had

service groups organized around here (hell, i even joined one when i first started out), based on the same sort of philosophy. a large group, putting money and time together to promote all of our busy-nesses. large full page adds, letter campaigns, coupon discounts, etc. one of them was even organized by the auto club!

so far they have all failed!

people are strange! they not only want comfort in their heating, but also when they feel comfortable with someone or company, they are hard to move.

there will always be those that look for the "best" price. but there will always be those that look for the "comfortable" price too!

walk tall, head up, and serve your clients hard, i think in the end, that's the way you beat the big guys!

Sent Email to W/M on 3/03/02

and never got anything back...waiting?, no

    The Email I sent

    "To whom it may concern,

I recently Installed W/M radiant heat in a small ranch. Your system works flawlessly with just two minor changes.
Your IPP 150 and manifolds are all one needs to set up the perfectly controlled radiant system. I also used Alumi pex.

I believe your W/M is missing the boat by not monitoring the web site: http://www.heatinghelp.com/wall_forum.cfm

The major partakers in this forum install radiant and it is a hot topic. But they don't use your product. Reps from other Co.'s are promoting there wares on the forum and are there to answer questions. I believe this might be a good place to answer tech questions and promote good will on the spot.

    Respectfully, Al"
