I use...
the "Hand Full" rule. If there are more than five branch circuits (5 fingers = a hand full) then I do reverse return, when possible. Sometimes structural preclusion pervaids it.

reverse return?
what do you mean by reverse return?0 -
You pipe it so
The first zone or loop off your main is the last one to get back to the boiler. Simply put, your supply side goes out as normal but the return piping would start at the point of your first supply, proceed to the last, then go back to the boiler. Scanner is broke so I can't send a drawing. Sorry

why?
The radiant manifolds I've seen are short enough that the pressure difference from one end to the other should be pretty small. Does it really make a difference?

Reverse versus direct return
Here's some drawings that will hopefully clear it up.

It depends...
If we're talking a brass Wirsbo manifold, probably not. If were talking a 3/4" man made manifold, it could...

It is a wirsbo manifold!!!!!!!!!!
It has 8 loops and they range between 215 to 230 feet.0 -
manifold flow
I'd use reverse return . Can't go wrong with it on a manifold that long.0
