did i mention this has.......
a steam heating system!!0 -
Their may be
some steel fin tube or a convector within the wall. That is, if their is a steam system or HW system.

Now I'd bet...
that you've got some concealed supplemental steam coils or fintube convector behind the walls.

lots of rads
under covers, but did not have time to pull anything apart or get really nosy!!0 -
Murph, those are recessed convectors
I'll bet theyre either Trane or Herman-Nelson, or maybe Webster. I have the Trane and H-N books that cover their early convectors- let me know if you need any info from them.
This is probably a Vapor system of some sort- I didn't see anything definite in the boiler room pic to say for sure, but Vapor was much more common with convectors than one-pipe steam was. I know Trane used cast-in orifices in some of their convectors, not sure about H-N or Webster. On the Wall some time ago there was a thread in which those built-in orifices bit someone who made the mistake of converting them to hot water- the orifices cause some very loud whistling!
And by the way, is that an old Ideal gas boiler sitting next to an Ideal smokeless coal boiler?

here steamhead
some more pics of the piping and traps!!0 -
Looks like a Webster Vapor System
You might even find those old Webster Sylphon radiator traps! You might also find trap housings cast integral with the convector elements- be real careful with these, they're easy to break when trying to open them to replace the elements.
The Vent Trap has a vacuum check mounted on top. I'd remove that- the short firing cycles of oil or gas can cause problems with steam distribution if you try to run vacuum.
I have the catalogs for both the Ideal gas boiler and the National Jacketed coal boiler- tell me what model numbers they are and I'll post the pages.

small 1/2 \" line runs bak
to the returns ,had not alot of time point and clik, but oh well here tis!!0 -
That's an ordinary Vapor radiator trap
piped a little differently, but it does the same job- to pass air and condensate into the dry return, while blocking steam.
You've got a heating museum there!
