Our first Burnham V8

We had to eliminate this Thermo Dynamics boiler , and a leaking aquabooster .

  • The 4 section V8 and Phase 3 indirect heater

I didnt realize the boiler was so short . We installed it on blocks to give the serviceman some height to work on it . We also ran into a little problem - the back jacket screw holes were drilled in the wrong spot - it made the back of the jacket 1 inch too high . Not too hard to fix . But being our 1st one , we thought we got the wrong jacket . This boiler had alot of thought built into it though - a double swingout door for someone who pipes the return in front of the boiler plate , 2 wing nuts and bolts built into the flue hood so you cant lose em , heavy duty edges so you cant crease the jacket when moving it , even a beauty plate that goes around the coil hole.

One question though - how do you handle a 4 section down a steep staircase ? We had 6 steps down into the basement , and with the low center of gravity and the length of the boiler , its real hard to keep the boiler balanced on the stairs . We were going to split it , but we havent received instructions on how to do it yet . Otherwise it was a smooth job , and burner efficiency at almost 87 % , a real fine running boiler .
  • We've been waiting

for quite a while for one of these pictures Ron. Thanks for the kind words about the V-8. I'm a little concerned about the rear jacket screw holes though. Are you referring to the screw for the rear jacket support bracket? I would like to discuss that one with you if at all possible Ron. I will e-mail you with my cell phone number.

    Burnham jacket

Ron Jr. Nice job! I've put in quite afew and found that with jacket also. After two I found the problem, The bracket is upside down. They don't show in book how to install or mark bracket with "This side up".Hopefully Glen reads this. Any way if you turn bracket other way it will line up. Hope this helps! PS What's in coke bottle oil? that's what I use to prime.
  • Oh , is that what that is ?

You know , I asked my partner to read the instructions before we put the jacket on . Thats my fault , sorry Glenn . We actually had our shop guy open up every jacket and measure where the holes were - all of them the same height . I think we might just be a tad dumb . I gotta remember to always read the instructions.

I think it goes to the programming we had with the Peerless - it has just 2 screw bolts that hold the jacket on in the back . We didnt even think those 2 holes would hold a support bracket . Which carton does the bracket usually come in ?

Thanks once again Glenn , I really appreciate your help . Oh yeah , is there a sequence to splitting the boiler to get it down a tricky staircase , and to reassemble it ? Take care , Ron
  • How did you guess ?

Yep , we usually use my Snapple bottle to prime the pump , but Coke was it today . I was setting up the header while my partner put the jacket on , so I dont know what he did with the bracket . Alls I know is is aint on the boiler. Probably thought it was extra parts we didnt need and tossed it . Now that I think about it he did say he had to keep the 2 screws in the back loose or the jacket pulls in too far . I shoulda known . Thank you John .

    How did I known?

Ron Jr. How did I know? I'm a oil man too!Put two in this week but I use package units, can do a push&pull in about four hours if all go's well. As far as spliting? no easy way.Once did a 6 sec.and had to order from factory a true knock-down.We used the V-9 series tool to put together in basement. If you think thier boilers are heavy wait until you move the crate of tools to put it together, good day to call in! John@Reliable

    was the ...

Thermo leaking at the coil plate? Or was it on the bottom... It looked as though it was the old style coil flange not extended out so if it leaks it goes on the floor not down the side... a true Achilles heel for steel..They didn't put it up on blocks did they? I always get the boiler off the floor especially if it's a steel boiler. More good work. Do you use the Phase 3 indirects a lot? What do you think? Whats your preference. I am partial to the Superstor line. kpc
  • Actually

I think the boiler was still running somehow . The customer told us that when she had the aquabooster installed 10 years ago , the mechanic told her it should last ten years . And it lasted 10 years and a few months before it leaked all over the basement . I believe that boiler was the old VTF series with the coil inside the jacket - and youre right , we take out alot of em because they leaked for years where you cant see it . We used to install the Phase 3 indirects all the time , now we are into Megastor . I dont know the ratings , but gallon for gallon , I think the Phase 3 heats the water faster , but I like having the aquastat outside and easily accesible on the Megastor , along with a drain for the tank . Both are quality products . Take care Kevin , Ron .
  • Jacket Bracket

    Hi Ron,

The support bracket for the rear jacket panel on the knocked down boiler is probably the culprit. It is easy to get it on the wrong way. It should be in your jacket carton on the knocked down boiler. As John said, I have been asking for some while to mark it "This Side up" but it hasn't happened yet. The good news is that the next one you do, you will no longer need the "This Side Up" label! Keep up the good work and thanks for using Burnham Ron. I believe that Frank and Jake are going to be with some of your people early this week. I will call him and remind him about the splitting info.

The V8 is a real nice unit

and as usual, Ron, you and your crew did a great job. That V will probably still be running nicely 20 years from now with proper care.

Here's a shot of the V8's ancestor- this V-14 will be 20 years young next summer, and it's still in great shape, though the target wall has been replaced. And of course, I Pump Away now!

  • I talked to my partner today

The guy who put the jacket on , and he said he didnt see the bracket . I am sure it was there - its just something he wasnt looking for , and tossed with the carton . Totally our fault for not reading the instructions . And thanks for the splitting info - we are gonna need it on the 5 section steamer thats supposed to be going in this week . One question - any advantage of twinning in the the 2 headers off the boiler on a 5 section steam job ? Thank you Glenn , Ron .
  • It better be

I dont want to be around when it has to be replaced - thats alot of cast iron in a little package . Thats the 1st V 14 Ive seen . Do you have alot of em in your area ? Thank you Steamhead , Ron
  • True Knockdown

I know what you mean . We once had the commercial sized Peerless - 8 section . Dont remember the model number , but it was the one with the 2 coils in front , one lower on the left , one higher on the right . We had to assemble it at the job in Brooklyn , push nipples and all . I heard long after the job is done that they have actual tools to pull the boiler together ! We're doing it with 2 inch nipples , boiler plates , and the draw rods they send with the boiler . And of course one push nipple goes in out of whack - and 4 hours down the drain .
  • Sure!

By using both risers on the V8 steam boilers and you will have a more stable water line, minimal surging and overall better performance. E-mail me with your mailing address and I will send you some drawings we put together for the V8 steam boilers called "the shopping list". These show single and double risers to the header and also dropped headers. They also show nipple lengths, elbows etc. that you may need. Hope this helps. Also let me know if you want the bracket and I will send one out to you.
