Oversized Steam Boiler

Member Posts: 128
I'm trying to figure out how to stop water hammer in a two pipe steam system. All the traps have just been replaced. Boiler is oversized, and brand new......so it is staying. The boiler is a Weil McLain LGB 10W/SN. Rated for 2,963 sq. ft. of steam. Also 711 MBH. Can someone refresh me on MBH......cant' remember what it stands for, or how to use it. Read somwhere that installing a selonoid valve (spell ck!) could be installed to help this problem. Just can't seem to remember where or how to install it? Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Patrick Giroux Grosse Pointe Park, MI.

same old story
how oversized is it? How much EDR actually exists? I would take a close look at the piping around the boiler..it also may have been installed in error..

An oversized boiler
may cause water hammer- then again, it might not. How "oversized" is the boiler and have you been able to tell exactly where the banging is coming from?
Also, what variety of two-pipe steam is this? Is it a "vapor" system? Have you located any manufacturers' names on the various components of the system, including any strange-looking things near the boiler or out at the end of the mains?

Downfire it
I believe LGB 's come with two stage gas valves whether or not it has two stage controls. Just disconnect the wire to the high stage terminal on the gas valve. The other Boiler guy at my church did this to our church boiler after I did a heat load calc and shut off rads to get the radiation to match the load. We went through last winter at low (50%) fire just fine on this three zone system.
