Old Kriebel steam - day one

Scary, aren't they? I didn't know that ANYONE still had any. Do you know if someone still makes 3 1/2" cast iron fittings and steel pipe?

  • We got the new Burnham together

It takes a lot more time to put together than other companies commercial boilers like Weil Mclain and Peerless , who use rubber gaskets between the sections - but the cast iron push nipples make a more sturdy boiler , in my opinion . Glenn Stanton , if you see this post - are we supposed to back off on the draw rods after assembly ? And is there supposed to be any type of cerafelt blanket or target wall for this boiler ? Nothing came with it .

One thing on the boiler that needs revision - I dont think the engineers work on these babies in the field - hows about changing the bolts that hold the burner door on - to studs and nuts instead ? Ever try to hold that heavy door in place while threading the bolt through ? With the studs instead - like Peerless and Weil have , they hold the door in place while you catch the nuts on . Much , much easier .

We also ran into another slight problem - the header we are tying into has 3 1/2 inch tappings . Noone on Long Island has these size fittings . We have to send someone to The Bronx tomorrow to pick the parts up . I wanted to at least have the header done today - looks like were in for a loooong day tomorrow .
  • When I called my supervisor

He asked me 3 times if it was 3 1/2 inch . And I told him 3 times I held a 4 inch nipple up there and a 3 inch nipple , and the size was in between . I almost had to take apart the whole header because the size is almost obsolete . Im not sure if the size is still made , but the supply in the Bronx had everything we needed . I'll see whos name is on the fittings .

    3 1/2 fittings

Ron,Have you tried OsWald Plumb+Heating up in No.Manhattan,Harlem use to have any fitting needed for steam,Ect...May i ask what do you use as a lube on the push nipples when yousess guys pull a boiler together.Used Chrisco veg, shorting in the past, water did not serge as much upon fire up. Nice job,JB
  • One of our helpers

lives in Whitestone - right near the bridge to The Bronx . We already called and they got it all - saves me a few hours minimum of repiping the whole header . Burnham ships a Teflon based sealant that you use on the push nipples - smells like citrus . We ran out on the 4th section , so we used Rectorseal mustard . We used it all the time on the Peerless push nipples , never a problem . We add a cleaner to the system and flush out all the leftovers . Thanks JB .
  • What did he

get out of the plumbing business and start selling coffee at 5 bucks a cup ? More lucrative .

    See you Saturday,
  • 4 inch pipe aint that hard to get

around here . There were a few jobs where we had to use a 4 inch flange instead of a union , but we get plenty of them now . This is how far we got today - the header is done and most of the returns are connected . Hopefully were gonna have the system up and running tomorrow . See you this weekend Chris , I need the break already .

  • Nice work Ron

The nuts on the draw rods should be loosened after the mating surfaces come together and tightened finger tight. There is no target wall or blanket on the V904A and larger boilers.....only a target wall on the 3 section. The studs have been requested before and I am not sure where we are with that request. The nipple compound is by Permatex and is intended to remain quite pliable. How are you controlling makeup water to this boiler Ron?

    Controls Question for Ron Jr.

Just trying to learn something, as I'm old to forced air but young to steam. Am I seeing two L.W.C.O.'s, two Vaporstats, and an Aquastat on this unit, and why the two Vaporstats and the Aquastats?
