    Blueray/Beckett actin up.

My 16 year old boiler is spitting debri out of the viewer plate, & creating smelly fumes, but running. Was serviced 2 months ago. [has been sooting up quickly recently]. The flame is 'afterburning'. How would I know if I have a backdraft or airflow problem? I do have air leak from where burner slides in to boiler, will check gaskets & 'mud up' as needed. I do have radiant loops in basement slab, but it's returning to a primary loop, temp should be ok. Any troubleshooting guidance? And how adjust air on Beckett? [There's a 'dial' on left from '0' up. Does higher number = more air?

marty the handyman,This boiler has to be set-up with combustion equipment, and even then you can have problems.Don't go messing around with anything you need to call a pro for this!

Whoever set it up did it wrong. After-burn can be caused by the oil hitting the combustion chamber and burning off at the end. or by a defective pump that is not cutting off and dripping oil.

    Or...

A very large ball of "coke" from a bad nozzle still burning after shutdown. This will heat up the end of the assembly enough to make the oil keep flowing after shut down . John got it right . Call a pro . If it was serviced that recently , there shouldn't be a problem. Make sure they have a test kit with them ! These boilers are extremely touchy and eying the fire is useless .(not that you can see much through a 1/2 inch hole to the side of the burner flange) Chris.

    BlueRay Boilers...

Make sure that the back plate assembly was removed at the yearly servicing. This must be done to keep debris from blocking the flue passes at the rear area.
