It was a 1950's - 60's thing. Most of the ones that I find were on basement or garage zones that were added later. Just on / off for the pump,no boiler control. It saved the cost of a relay. Trouble is the electricians got the circuit from whatever was closest. Not always the boiler circuit. Be careful when replacing the pump!

  • And I do believe she put on some weight

I would love to know how much she's pushing now . We had to take this one up a full staircase , with a pie cut step at the top .

As usual , I forgot to get the real name of the boiler . I just go by the nickname the oldtimers gave her . I guess for her assets in front . This one was a 3 zoner .
  • One of the last WBV boilers

we will be installing . The customer really appreciated that we moved the boiler as far back as possible , and relocated the domestic expansion tank so he doesn't hit his head , again .

Curious as to why your company is switching from Peerless....

    Whats the issue?
  • We are switching from

Peerless to Burnham boilers . Our parent company started using them a while ago , and they believe they are a better product . I was lucky to be one of the 1st to install a V7 in NYC some time ago , but this Monday will be my 1st V8 . Nothing wrong with the Peerless line though - a very durable product.

    Just curious...

I did not see any relays? Are they just out of sight or are you doing something different that I don't know about..KPC
  • All 3 zones

were line voltage . Unless the customer requests new digital thermostats , we keep em the same .

That might be an old Johnson (S.T. Johnson that is) boiler

they made quite a few round ones with that general appearance- basically a vertical water-tube steel boiler.

  • Just about every boiler we work on

has at least one zone that is line voltage . In quite a few houses , to save a wire they would run 3 wires from the emergency switch upstairs to the boiler - black is hot , white is neutral , and red is thermostat . And I wont even get into the Levitt houses that break the circulator on the neutral side .........
  • Thanks Kevin

I found out our fist V8 will be a 4 section steamer in a few days . I hope theyre easy to split .
  • Our little trick of keeping the floor clean

And sometimes getting the floor cleaner than it was , is to leave speedy dry down on the cement while we work . The guys tell me I look like I'm feeding chickens when I throw it down . Thank you Scott , coming from you thats high praise .

    Domestic coil

    Hey Ron,

Nice clean looking job. We don't do many domestic coils anymore. When we do, we're required to install an anti-scald mixing valve. Am I not seeing one here, or don't you guys use them in your area.

    Paragon

Yep , Paragon....called a May West or a Dolly Partton depends on the age of who is asked. Also called a"one hole Paragon" . Because of there is only one tube that you can clean from the top . You have to clean them through the fire expection door(the size of a 4-arm). You need to shove your arm in to the fire box with a brush and clear the outer edge flue passage. Dirty job as well as a service problem . You can't(but we all have in a fix) clean them when they are hot.

The Dolly Partton was build like a brick Sh!t house , They were made of thick boiler plate. I never seen one leak on it's own to this day . The coils were flanged bolted . And the design was way ahead of it's time. They were a very efficant boiler , but way too tight for the low speed burners at that time.Thank God for the AF . .... The boiler also had a neat built in expansion tank . But if the coils are used you needed to install a ceiling tank , then the built in expansion works like a air scoop. Dumping the collected air back into the tank.....
  • Big , open basement

to work in this time . Even had an outside staircase . 2 good pluses for this job . The bad part was we had to go across about 75 feet of grass on a down slope , and the top of the stairs ended at the chimney , so they put in a pie step to go to the left around it . There were 3 of us big guys pulling the boiler , and even the customer helped for that last step . Thanks Murph .
