convector cover importance re. heat output

in THE MAIN WALL
i am making changes and additions to the heating system of a house which has convectors, probably from the 30's. some previous homeowner removed the original covers and replaced with decorative mesh, with no solid middle section and no louvers or clear opening at the bottom. does anyone have any info on the effect of the geometry of the cover re. the heat output of the convector?
