A plumber's ruler

Has anyone any idea of a plumber's ruler? it is said that it will measure in 45 degrees for plumbing pipes at a 45 degree angle (or something to that effect) And where if any where may I purchase one.

Lufkin and Ridgid sell a 6 foot folding wood ruler that will do this.

    could not help BUT

say get a wife, as a ruler is a king or monarch (Queen). A good rule is to never mess with another mans wife.
That is if she is not your wife she must be someone elses. (married or not)she is not your wife!
Now as to a tape measure The wood one memtioned above will do it,as well as the tape. just fold it such that the two short sides are the same length. A 45* angle will result.

    Good teaching, bigugh!

Honestly, I'm one of those who measures them in mid-air. Am almost always accurate to thread-in length BUT...

I'll REMEMBER THAT and dig great-grandpa's folding rule out of my "precision" tool box--it looked so good for so long that I knew it MUST have a GOOD reason--the next time so it's certain to be perfect.

    THANKS!

    My Dad Had One Too

Only he was, no is, a carpenter and a fussy ( listen..my youth is speaking) cabinet maker.

We used to change from storm to screen windows. He'd freak out if I put the slot screws not vertical or horizontal? Something about screwing them in too far??

Come to my home and look around.....switchplates, receptacles and windows. Check the screws!!!! LOL!

Wonder how we all get here???

    show a good finish

Just tradition to show we had class.

Try this with torx....so much for class.

SAD thing is I've seen jobs where level, plumb and square aren't in the realm of class.

    NO RESPECT

New age??? my kid laughs too

the rule is a lost art. It will do a lot more than measure.
Like all expertise it will be lost if not used nearly every day. good luck bigugh

    plumbers ruler

try multiplier 1.41, you will like it. do you think that you will like working with pipe?
  • Great number

Please explain how you use it. Does that number give you a pipe cut measure? Do you allow any for threads? Is that measure from the outside of the pipe corner or the inside of the pipe corner? On two inch pipe, it can make a difference.

    pipe corners

Noel Pipe has a topside, bottomside, inside, outside, frontside, backside, end and center but no coners.Try to make measurments center to center then take off fittings for end to end measurment.

Useing a Lufkin #066f inside reading rule;put your total fitting takeoff on end of pipe to be cut, mark and cut center to center measurement and you will have correct end to end lth.

Measure offset center to center, multiply same by 1.41.This will give measurment of 45 run center to center.
  • Thanks

Your first post was a little light on information.

I've run some pipe, myself, in the past. I'm glad you finished your post.

    Hey, I do that

Whenever I rough in a house with PVC I always keep the writing on one side, and on the same horizontal plane. Looks pretty cool doesn't it? And it doesn't take anymore time than sloppy...

    We must be neurotic?

Split ring hangers. Steamhead Fred would always put the screws up on horz piping and on the right on vert piping.

Sadly, me too. Of course the screws are 12 o'clock and 3 o' clock.....even if I have to drive the suckers in! ;-D!!!!!

But writing on plastic pipe??? You're over the edge Casmo!! jk
See you at the PlumbLevel Asylum! I'll be the one with the nice level lobotomy stitches!

    talk about neurotic

I have been frustrated with Charlotte pipe because the writing does'nt follow a straight line, it winds around the pipe. So I go to a supply house out of my way because they carry Bristol......

  • measure distance

between the pipes and multiply and this will bring you to the 45* measure of course you will have to deduct for the lager sizes and round down for the smaller!!
