Nothing heats like a train.....

I imagine it has to be that way, now that trains aren't steam powered any longer.

    Steam generators

The oil-fired monsters that they used in the diesel and some electric locomotives were unbelievable. The feedwater was carried in tanks under the locomotive, and they burned the same diesel the loco's did. These things were very messy and leaky, that's why so many E & F units were rotted out at the ends. When they shut down, they'd leave a pall of black smoke that was an epa inspector's dream, same when they started up. The manual instructs crew to light off these critters by dropping in a lit fusee, if the ignition failed! YIKES! Thank God for the 480 volt head-end power of today. Plug it in, voila! Heat, cooling, lights, refrigeration and cooking! Just be careful where you grab those cables, and that the engineer has shut it down before unhooking. That stuff will fry an elephant!

    The old Western Maryland Railway

used dedicated "steam generator cars" when it went Diesel. These cars were mostly converted or retired when W-M discontinued passenger service (don't remember the dates). But they kept one available, mostly for rail fan trips.

The Western Maryland was absorbed into the Chessie System which also included the B&O and C&O railroads. The whole thing is now called CSX Transportation, with headquarters in Jacksonville, Florida. All that's left in Baltimore (where it all started) is the B&O Railroad Museum and some 100-year-old tunnels- one of which survived a hazmat fire recently.
