Steamhead,
What do you think about this, when I install a small steam boiler I always pipe fill so that it will go thru return and hartford loop.I feel this way will always keep these pipes open and clog free. Thanks

    boiler water feed

it is always best to pipe your water feed thru the return before hartford loop. you do not want to feed directly into any boiler tappings because cold water entering a hot boiler surface could shock boiler. I always install say 1-1/4 x 1/2" tee on return line before rising up to hartford loop. I've seen jobs where installer used a reducing tee instead of elbow right at close nipple in equalizer to connect feed line, this creating water hammer if water was added at time boiler was under pressure. As an added feature i recommend a shut off valve before hartford loop and a 3/4" full port ball upstream to flush return line.
