Not sure if you had a chance to read my post on master venting and using it to downsize boiler to the structure heat loss. Also, I was looking at using the Armstrong rad vents to vent two mains in a one pipe system. 2.7 cu ft main would get two Armstong's with D orifices ( 1.4 cfm each) and 1.74 cu ft main would get 1 D orifice and one #6 (.4cfm) orifice to get near perfect main balance. BTW that Ideal Redflach boiler was a number 2 firing at 400,000 input natural gas. Firebrick was installed in the flue passages at one time, I suppose to reduce the speed of gases through the boiler and to create some turbulence to help scrub the heat from the flue gases better. Efficiency info on this boiler?
I hope to develop the procedure fully and write it up on the balancing process to use a smaller ssteam boiler than the radiation size. Got The deadman steam school material and it appears to have filled in the last few blancks I had in the procedure.

Just now got around to answering those posts

it's been a crazy week and I haven't had time to get on the Wall as much as I like.

The Redflash info is attached- I had to do two scans to get the entire chart. Depending on the number of sections (which you didn't specify), the connected load and how big your fire is, efficiency is anywhere from 65 to 72 percent on coal. They don't publish the basis for these ratings, or any ratings at all for oil or gas.

Pat few days I've been wating for parts, so

I watched all of the steamschool videos and done some thinking. Next week, things will be flying again. In response to you thoughts about other variables in venting, I would imagine that having the replaceable orifices like on the armstongs would be real handy to tweak the system. Maybe Gorton could use orifices on the No 2. so it could be a uiversal main vent....be awfully handy. Thanks for your help. Once I write up the balancing procedure I will send you a copy for your input.

Redflash boiler is a No. 210-6, 138 series...

    Net EDR Steam Water
    Oil fired 1000 1600
    Hand fired 1450 2320
    Stoker 1150 1840

Not sure how to read the chart.

    That's the 2-S-10

it was made later than the 1929 catalog I scanned. The 1947 catalog has those ratings in it. It's the same basic boiler though.
