I got a sales call for a nice couple who are buying an old house down in Wash. DC. Neighborhood is in transition. I used to avoid it, now its filling up with yuppies who are dumping big bucks into these gorgeous old run down houses. This particular couple told me of their plans to rid the house of those big decorative column cast iron radiators and could I put in a furnace in the basement and a heat pump in the attic. (I wonder if they noticed the tic in my right eye that got bigger the more they talked.) I told them if they did that it would show up in Saint Peter's book of their sins on judgement day. I got a laugh from them and gave them a price on 2 2 speed Bryant systems with electric zone dampers to cool the attic/office space they are putting in. I also gave them a price on a radiant floor for the kitchen since the radiator was in a cabinent under the sink. (Duh!!!) Hope they dont find someone who will give them what they think they want.

    Since they have an attic

they can put the A/C up there, and keep those big beautiful radiators. But a new boiler is a must! Keep at them Wayne, you'll get the job.

    Goes to show...

that alot of the time people will say that they know what they want, but they really want you to tell them what they want!!!!
Confidence in your products and your abilties go a long way to instill confidence in the people that you are selling too!!!
Just this week sold two jobs for more money than my competition!!! Both jobs I convinced them that what I wanted to do was the BEST way to do the job and that even though it cost more...it would be worth it in the long run!!!

Man, I LOVE my job!!!! and I do my best to let it show!!!!!! There isn't anything I would rather do than create the best comfort systems that will give people the most bang for the buck and to see them happy and hear about how happy they are from the other people that call me up to do their work!!!!

Way to go Wayne!!!!! Do them a great job...and they'll tell 10 more people!!!!! Do a bad job and they'll tell 30 people!!!!

    Watch out for \"Rusty Van\"

Wayne, your closing statement, "hope they don't find someone who will give them what they think they want". There are plenty of reputable contractors that would install a beautiful forced air system. That would be CRIMINAL, but happens all the time. The land fill is full of big grand radiators.

What clouds matters even more is that "Rusty Van" is VERY accomodating. He takes their request, improperly sizes the equipment, quotes the job below material costs, and then butchers the installation. Of course, if "Rusty" finishes the job, months later when the homeowner calls because the system isn't working properly, "Rusty" is no where to be found.

Thanks for continuing to raise the bar in the Washington D.C. marketplace.
