I have a one-pipe steam system and am using a pressuretrol Dan's book states that it will do my boiler a true service to replace the p-trol with a vaportstat. the guys at my local plumbing store say to leave the p-stat and that a vaporstat is only used in commercial applications!!!!! Anyway, what model should I use...is there a specific one and can I use one on a millivolt system?

I think the supply house guys

are confused. Vaporstats belong on heating systems that are designed to operate on less than 1 psi, which would include just about every house in America.

    Be a little careful

on the honeywell website. I typed in vaporstat and got only one model and the PDF file was only a one page descrtiption that described very little. You still can probably get a choice between 0 to 1 PSI and 0 to 4 PSI with their models. Just make sure the one you get opens on pressure rise like a 404A. Perhaps someone will give the exact model number they currently purchase,

    Oh how I wish

we had burners that mimicked the coal fires of old! Perhaps with ribbon burners turned on a slight angle so that as the fire dies down, the heat moves correspondingly closer to the cast iron sections. Gotta fire on full tilt for good light-off, but could quickly modulate back using outdoor reset.

just like banking the coal fires of yester-years?

    Vaporstat model info

Model# L608A1046. This has a single-pole, double-throw mercury switch so it can be used for either open-on-rise or close-on-rise applications. Its range is 0 to 1 PSI. Unfortunately, it ain't cheap.

I generally don't use these on one-pipe systems unless there is a severe overheating problem and all the other factors (firing rate, thermostat anticipator etc) check OK. But on Vapor systems, this control is essential since these systems are designed to run at less than a pound.

    Hope this helps.

    Vaporstats

There are only six models of this control. They may not be available at all distributors, since they are in the FlameSafeguard catalog, meaning that the distributor will probably be more commercially-oriented. I'll list them below.

    L408A1132 SPST break on rise 0 oz/in2 to 16 oz/in2
    L408A1157 same 0 psi to 4 psi
    L408B1131 SPST make on rise 0 oz/in2 to 16 oz/in2
    L408B1149 same 0 psi to 4 psi
    L608A1046 SPDT,breakRB,makeRW 0 oz/in2 to 16 oz/in2
    on rise
    L608A1053 same 0 psi to 4 psi

Enter those numbers in the techlit section of the new webpage and you'll get more info. Thanks for using Honeywell products.

    oops!

I'm sorry about the scrambled mess this turned out. I typed a table in, but the gnomes that move the 0's & 1's around mixed it up. Email me if you want any translation.
